Daily Coin # 86 A STUNNING 1937 Australian Crown

in #steemsilvergold6 years ago

What we have here today is the largest of the Australian .925 coins of the pre-decimal period . This crown was issued from the Melbourne mint in Australia in 1937-38. It was the only crown struck for Australia during the sterling period. Sterling coinage ceased after 1964 . The Australian dollar was introduced in 1966 along with a new 50¢, 20¢, 10¢ , 5¢ , 2¢ and 1¢ coins. Today's coin is composed of 92.5 %silver and 7.5 % copper , weighs 28.284 grams ,and is 38 mm in diameter .
The obverse of this Australian beauty shows us a portrait of a bare headed King George the Sixth facing to the left with the words " GEORGIVS VI D.G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP" which translates to "George VI by the Grace of God, King of all the British territories, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India" . This coin is a perfect example of why the mints should have stopped bagging silver coins .

The reverse of this coin features an elegantly jeweled crown and the the words that surround it that say COMMONWEALTH:OF:AUSTRALIA • ONE CROWN • and the year 1937 below the crown ,

A crown with a beautiful Crown design on the reverse. Very nice! Does this George ever wear a crown in any of the coinage? Just curious.

Yes he did, on the coins of India and Hong Kong.

As Andre said ss !!

What would you grade this coin being the face has some marks on it. The reverse is in great shape!! Nice coin. Thanks for the post!! 👍

Not trying to duck your question but to me grading is a very personal thing , I don't own any graded coins as of yet !! I would grade this as beautifully aged !!! ;-)

I've learned in the years of collecting to try to always get choice material. I have so many coins with surface scratched that are still worth a pretty penny. Coin collecting is so elite. You preserve your wealth while learning history. What's better than that? See you soon my friend!!

You wrote the right word: elegant. That's what this crown is.

It is in my top 5 Ronaldo !!!!!

Damn man!!! That one caught me off guard!
