Daily Coin # 155 A very Nice Condition 10 French Francs From 1965
Technology is exploding world wide ! On January 27th 1965 the first ground station-to-aircraft radio communication via satellite was performed . America is back at war as the first US combat forces arrive in South Vietnam (3,500 Marines) on March 8 1965 . This large (37 mm) was minted in Paris France in 1965 along with 8,085,499 others . They were struck from 90 % silver and weigh 25 grams .
The obverse features Hercules protecting two women who symbolically represent “Liberty” and “Equality” . Equality (on the right)is shown holding a scale of justice . Liberty (on the left)is shown holding a pole with a phrygian cap on top of the pole . Hercules stands in the center protecting the two women and wearing the skin of the Nemean Lion . On the outer perimeter in French is the motto “LIBERTE-EGALITE-FRATERNITE” or in English "Liberty – Equality – Brotherhood” .
The reverse of this coin shows the denomination (10 francs) and the year (1965) within a wreath of olive and oak branches which are surrounded by the legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE . A cornucopia and an owl are seen below the wreath .
The edge is smooth with multiple raised images on it .

It is the first time that I see an Hercules depiction in a "modern" circulating coin. I wonder why the French used a Greek mythological figure. They are so nationalistics...
They made these "Hercules "coins as far back as 1794/5 Ron !!
