Daily Coin # 149 A Modern Day Post Decimalization 1 Dollar Non-Circulating Commemorative Proof Coin From New Zealand
A fairly rare coin for today . On January 3 1980 gold hits record highs of US $634 an ounce . on January 18 1980 the price of an ounce of silver hits record high of $50.35 in Comex trading . Six United States diplomats , posing as Canadians manage to escape from Tehran Iran as they board a flight to Zurich Switzerland on January 27 1980 .
Today's coin was minted as far as I can tell by the Royal Mint in the UK . It was minted of .925 % silver and was 1 of only 20,000 struck ! It weighs 27.216 grams and is 38.8 mm in diameter . This coin has a Numista rarity # of 76 !!
The obverse of this great looking coin shows us a different portrait of Elizabeth II , she is wearing what is called the Russian Fringe Tiara facing right surrounded by the legend ELIZABETH II QUEEN OF NEW ZEALAND with the year * 1980 * at the bottom .
The reverse of today's coin features a New Zealand piwakawaka or fantailed bird sitting on a branch with the words ONE DOLLAR below .
The edge of this beauty is reeded .
