Daily Coin # 144 A Special Queen Victoria Crown Coin
This coin is very special to me because it was a gift from a very special friend from the UK . On January 29 1845 Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven" is first published in the New York Evening Mirror . March 28 1845 Mexico drops diplomatic relations with US . This beautiful coin was minted in 1845 in London England by the Royal Mint . It was struck from .925 silver , weighs 28.28 grams , and is 38.61 mm in diameter .
The obverse again shows us a Young head Queen Victoria 1st portrait facing left surrounded by the legend VICTORIA DEI GRATIA (Victoria by the Grace of God) with the year under 1845 .
The reverse of this lovely crown is exactly the same as yesterday's coin ! It features a a crowned and quartered shield that depicts the coats of arms of the three countries that made up the UK at that time ; England , Scotland , and Ireland surrounded by the legend BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF: (Queen of the British territories, Defender of the Faith) . All within a laurel wreath .
The edge of the coin is smooth with incuse writing that says Decus et tutamen Anno Regni Ⅷ ( An ornament and a safeguard year of reign Ⅷ) .
