Daily Coin # 135 A Stunning Victoria Double Florin From 1887
I received this coin from a great friend from Scotland ! This coin was given the name Barmaid's Grief because of it's similarity to a crown coin which was only slightly larger but with the same portrait on it ! February 2 1887 Groundhog Day is celebrated for the first time at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, USA . On June 21 1887 Great Britain celebrates the Golden Jubilee (50 years)of Queen Victoria . US receives rights to build a naval base in Pearl Harbor, on Oahu, Hawaii on November 29 1887 .
Today's coin was minted in London England in 1887 . It was minted from .925 % silver , weighs 22.62 grams , and is 36 mm in diameter . There were only 483,347 of this variety minted (roman 1 in date ) a total mintage (all variety's) of 1,429,000 was produced in 1887 .
The obverse features a robed , bejeweled , and crowned Victoria facing to the left . The legend VICTORIA DEI GRATIA (Victoria by the Grace of God) .
The reverse of this beauty shows us four cruciform-crowned shields bearing the emblems of England (x2), Scotland, and Ireland, with scepters between the shields . The abbreviated Latin words surround them FID DEF BRITT REG (Defender of the Faith , Queen of the British territories )

My coins my choice !!!!! My friend in Scotland says Wales is not on those shields because it was not considered a country back then it was considered part of England !!!!
So why two shields for England?
My computer died last night!!! I am using a chrome book that won't do anything! This is the best of your Victorias!!! I love the details of her perals, her brooch, and just overall quality of this coin! Someday, I will have a Crown with Victoria depicted on it.
