Finding Silver When You Least Expect It

My son played in a baseball tournament over the weekend and the 100+ mile trek took us thru number of toll roads. I thought the first toll was going to be $1.50, so I paid with a $5. I pulled up, noticed it was a 75 cent toll and was confused when I had received three $1 bills and what I thought were two quarters.

As we pulled away, my son said we received a dollar coin and a quarter and when he put the quarter in the ash tray, I heard the silver coin sound. He had heard it also, pulled the quarter back out to find it was a 1964.

He was focused on the dollar coin and never took notice of the silver quarter until we both heard that sound that only a silver coin makes. With the exception of a war-time nickel, he had never come across a silver coin given in change and it had been more than a decade since I receive a silver quarter in change. Thankfully, the toll-taker was so engrossed in their phone to notice they were giving me a silver quarter in the change.

Even though we were not able to make a weekend trip to a coin shop, we were still able to add something to the collection, this time at face value. Keep your eyes open stackers, you never know where your next piece of silver will come from.

The sound of silver and you both heard it. Excellent :-)

Music to my ears...just not a good thing for a stacker to hear while operating a vehicle at 65mph.

Back in my bar-tending days, I would scavenge the cash drawer every night for silver or anything else interesting. I managed to find a couple junk quarters. I mostly ran across older notes. It is amazing what you can find by just paying attention.

Nice! Years ago, a friend's sister worked in the cash office of a major retail store and the store manager used to allow her to purchase coins at face value. This was the late 90s and she used to find several silver coins each month. I always check my change, but since I was driving, we honestly might have missed this coin had it not been for that unique silver coin sound.

Yeah, that is why I could never work in a bank. I just wouldn't be able to help myself from switching out coins, hehe.

Same here. I would be checking dates on every old looking coin or dropping them on the counter to see if they "sounded silver".

Very cool! I have yet to find any silver in my change, but I have found a silver dime in one of the coinstar machines I check whenever I'm at the grocery store.
I've made it a game with my kids so they love running to check the returned change on those things. Usually its a hodgepodge of nickels and cents and foreign coins, which are cool in their own right, but every so often silver turns up!

Keep checking those coinstars. I've heard many stories of silver coins getting rejected by those machines. Thumbs up on making it a game with your children!

Ding Ding Ding....JACKPOT!

Just when I thought maybe all the 90% coins were out of circulation...BooYah!
