My first Menē platinum item arrived, it was originally going to be a father's day surprise, but another opportunity came up. This platinum Hex bolt has become my first piece of platinum in the collection.

It weighs exactly 2.99 grams (my scale shows 3 grams), it's well designed. It has a shine that's a little different than silver. It does not tarnish and it is much denser than silver.

Learning about Platinum.

Platinum is a substance I'm not that familiar with. Holding this MENE platinum hex bolt in my hand, it's much heavier than I would expect.

Here are a few things about platinum I learned today:

Almost half of all platinum mined today is used in catalytic converters.

Of the 218 ton of platinum sold in 2014, 98 tonnes were used for vehicle emissions control devices (45%) Wikipedia

I watched a video where someone took an old catalytic converter and extracted 0.06 grams of platinum powder from it, worth maybe a few dollars.

A used catalytic converter can be purchased on ebay for about $40, it would take 50 catalytic converters to extract enough platinum for a hex bolt. $40 x 50 = $2000. Naw. I think I'll stay with Menē .

Less Platinum is mined than gold or silver.

Platinum is about as rare as gold, but not mined nearly as much. Which makes platinum technically rarer in abundance than gold!

The origin of the name "Platinum"

In Spain, it was given the name Platina literally meaning "little silver", believing it was an immature (young) form of silver. This became the English word "Platinum".

Platinum was known as the 'unmeltable' metal.

Because of platinum's extremely high melting point (3,215 degrees F), traditional smelting was impossible with this metal. It wasn't until chemical methods were discovered in the 1800's that platinum could be used to make jewelry.

Platinum was once thrown away.

Because working with platinum is so difficult, the metal was often discarded as worthless.

The Italian-French physician Julius Caesar Scaliger discovered Platinum in 1557. In 1590 Spanish Conquistadors discovered a white metal in the rivers of Equador. Not realizing its superb qualities, they named it contemptuously platina (little silver) and threw it back into the river to ripen into silver. Source

Platinum was illegal in 1942

Platinum is highly prized for making military equipment and to prevent a shortage or hording the valuable metal by private investors, all non-military platinum use was prohibited during world war 2.

In 1942, the US government declared platinum a strategic mineral, prohibiting its use in any capacity besides the industry of war.
