Every Metal Has a Story: Five Ounce Copper Round
The Five Ounce Copper Round
Here we have the 5 OZ AVDP (Avoirdupois) Copper Token
Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Copper is measured differently than Silver
While silver and gold are measured in Troy oz, copper is measured in Avoirdupois ounces - a measurement used since the 13th century. Five Avoirdupois is slightly less than 5 Troy ounces.

This thing is really big.
Putting this piece of metal next to a half-dollar, the size becomes apparent. It makes the $0.50 piece look small.
It's thick also, about three time the thickness of a typical coin. The reeded edges are really deep and feel good in your hand.
Brief history of the "Reeded" edge.
Most people are accustomed to the reeded edges of some coins. While the copper penny and nickle are smooth, the dime and quarter and half-dollar and dollar coins are all have milled edges so they have a texture to it.
Back when our money had metal value, people would try to "save money" by clipping or filing the edges of their silver coins. They would melt their silver dust and clippings for tradable silver nuggets. Reeded edges make this process almost impossible to get away with, since it would become apparent that the coin has been damaged and some of the metal value filed or clipped away. Feel the edge for the reeded edge to know it's fully intact.
Silver Bullet and Silver Shield
What I find fascinating about tokens is not just the value stored in the metal, but also the story. Every metal has a story behind it and that story is what makes the object have value.
The Silver and Bullet Silver Shield became famous for it's witty and social and/or political messages. Launched September 2012, Silver Bullet Silver Shield began creating their own unique and striking coin designs. They created a niche market of collectors all focused on a single message:
Physical silver, in any form, held by an individual, is both a defense against inflation and against the destructiveness of fractional banking. It is the idea that acquiring silver is a direct way to expedite the collapse of the fragile, fraudulent banking system. It is the reminder to our society that physical silver is both the bullet and the shield that defend us in the war that we face today, against our values and our self-esteem. Adding this message here, since most people gloss over long quotes. This round will be given to the first to ask for it. It is the idea that we know our values and will not give them up. It is the idea that we know our principles and will not see them ignored. It is the idea that we own our selves, and will not lay down and stop fighting. Ideas, as we know, are bulletproof.
Over the next several years, the coins became very popular among underground trading websites and eBay. They eventually caught the attention of the largest bullion dealers and they became available for sale online.
The Silver Shield Five OZ Copper Token is difficult to find anymore.
If you look hard enough, you may find a few for sale on eBay or other sites, but they are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Most people who purchase one of these big rounds are not too willing to part with them.
I purchased this round from SD Bullion, which they have since discontinued. AMPEX was selling a tube of 20 of these giants! That's gotta be impressive to hold! Of course it's discontinued now.

Thanks!!!
I have collect some silver coins over the years and even got some in pocket change!
As for this..." This round will be given to the first to ask for it." Not sure I saw anyone ask for it, if not then I will ask for it! Thanks
Congratulations! It is YOURS! If you are on discord, hit me up and we'll make arrangements! @ironshield
I am on there...will try to reach you there!
It's in the mail, on it's way! @ironshield
Excellent...thanks @ironshield
Although I have not come in contact with this currencies, I believe why they are not widely used today is that they too cumbersome to carry along and because of that paper money was created. #steemsoccer1
Yes, in the US we used to have Silver Certificate Notes, which were redeemable (non-negotiable) for 'lawful money', a silver coin worth a dollar. These days our notes are not redeemable for anything, but only tradeable (negotiable) for goods and services. @ironshield
hahahahaha this is awesome!!!!!! I saw the "this round will be given" but I was like - wait... what? that's not part of the quote. I kept reading and thinking is he really giving something away???? LOL what an AMAZINGLY fun thing to do in a post!!!!!! Now in the comments I see that THERE WAS something given away! aw man.... i came too late ;)
but seriously - what a great idea! I might have to try to do something fun like that in a future post for me.... just have to think of something to give away hehehehehe
but now that I've said all that - you know.... sometimes I click on a post and think - well is this one going to be interesting or boring???
and every time! I find myself drawn into the details that the author has researched! There are so many interesting ways to share knowledge! I never thought I would be intrigued by coins! but when you showed the size difference between the half dollar and the round - my mouth literally dropped open! and then seeing how people had clipped their silver! thank you for sharing this! very interesting!!! :)
I think you did a thorough research before writing this article and you did tell the story behind copper which I feel is becoming a lost part of our world today. Copper was primitive means of value exchange then but it's uses differ today. Thanks for sharing!
We may find that it again becomes a premium means of value exchange someday. I see the advantage in digital currencies and the convenience of electronic transfers, but i'm sure you've also heard the saying "You don't own it until you hold it." @ironshield
I really want to get the Nordic Creatures collection out of copper. This Inspires me to pull the trigger sometime soon , thanks for the post!
Thanks for checking it out! @ironshield
coinclipping was one of the first reasons for inflation before the banks start3ed creating money. Nice coin
This was when inflation was manageable, unlike today where the Fed uses "quantitative easing" to flood the market with crisp new $100 bills from out if nothing. @ironshield
What is the financial value of these silver coin? I means, If I hold few 10 silver coins, how wealthy am I?
It all depends on the weight and purity of the silver. If you have a photo of the silver coins, I might be able to estimate the value for 10 of them. @ironshield
How interesting. I had never heard of those different sorts of measurements. And while I do not have any of those sorts of metals in abundance, I do appreciate the beauty of the coin that you showed. I bet it feels real nice in the hands - a good amount of heft.
It feels really solid and cold. Copper is an excellent conductor of heat. @ironshield
handsome cheers :)
Thank you! @ironshield
