A Double Florin to end the week and its finally weekend for me \o/
After 2 weeks of nights without a day off the weekend has finally arrived and what better way to see the weekend in than a double florin, it arrived yesterday while i was asleep and i opened it before work knowing that this morning the weekend would be here \o/.
A double celebration, I think these are great coins , weighty in the hand, made of sterling silver and quite a regal design, This one is dated 1887 which was the first year of mintage of this short lived coin which was minted for only 4 years between 1887 and 1890, 1887 had a mintage of 483,347 ( i wonder how many are still around now), there were some variants in proof or that had arabic fonts or inverted 1s instead of the I in Victoria . but never the less this is a coin that feels nice to hold and im glad its mine \o/.
Worn and currently weighing 21.5g it has a 1.12 gram deficit from its original minted weight of 22.62g.
The year it was minted saw Queen Victorias Golden Jubilee, representing 50 years on the throne, It was also the year artist L.S. Lowry and Boris Karloff were born.
1887 was also the year Glenfiddich Single malt Whiskey was first distilled.
And here it is (the coin not the whiskey lol).
Thanks very much for looking.
I like Victorian fashions. I wonder what a Double florin would buy in London fashion Shops in 1887.
