Today I want to make a cheerful and festive publication.

The apostle Santiago is the patron of Spain and Galicia.

Every year, on July 25, the Festival of the Apostle Santiago is celebrated in multiple Spanish locations and in many other places in different parts of the world.

In Santiago de Compostela these parties take place in the second half of July and have an extensive cultural program. Not without reason, they show the recognition of international tourist interest.

But one of the most anticipated events is the fireworks show that takes place in the Plaza de Obradoiro.

On the night of July 24 there is an impressive multimedia show that is accompanied by some extraordinary fireworks. I have only had occasion to see him only once.

The show takes place in the last half hour of July 24.

What most attracts attention and the most spectacular are the multimedia effects that are developed by projecting images on the facade of the cathedral. On many occasions it gives the impression that the cathedral burns with fire or is completely destroyed. They are special effects very well achieved and accompanied by an incredibly evocative soundtrack.

It is a privilege to contemplate the spectacle from the "Plaza del Obradoiro", in front of the facade. For which many people make a long wait to get in there.

The next day, the 25th, you can admire the gigantic botafumeiro swinging along the cathedral, after the traditional offering to the Apostle Santiago.

The festivities end on July 31 with another magnificent fireworks display.

History of the Camino de Santiago

After the discovery in the year 813 of the tomb of the apostle Santiago, a pilgrimage began that has remained unchanged since then and that can still be done on foot.

In 1122, Pope Calixto II decided to implement the Compostelan Holy Year, with the aim of strengthening the Camino de Santiago. I declare a holy year whenever July 25 coincides on a Sunday. These special years are also called the Jacobean or Jubilee Year.

This circumstance is repeated in cycles of 6, 5, 6 and 11 years. The next holy year will be 2021 and for this occasion a great effort is being made to restore the cathedral. Recently they have removed the scaffolding that covered the façade and have opened the 12th century Portico de la Gloria which has recovered its polychrome

Therefore, in each century there are only 14 Saints and then, the Holy Door is opened and indulgences are given to all those pilgrims who go to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, pray a prayer and receive a sacrament of communion. For this reason, the Xacobeos years have a greater influx of pilgrims from all over the world.

The audiovisual show and the fires of July 24 are something unique. Here I show you a video so you can admire them. The projections seem to make the cathedral burn or be destroyed.
