Ticks and Their Effect on Your Summer Fun

The last 25 years reports of Lyme disease cases have tripled in the United States and the number of cases has ballooned in counties of the upper midwestern and northeastern United States and known to even triple in counties known as high risks areas for Lyme disease-the increase of the cases there increased some 300% according to the CDC.

One explanation for this increase is that ticks that transmit Lyme disease have expanded their
territory and are found in areas where 20 years ago they didn't exist. This makes it imperative that people take precautions to prevent tick bites.

Ticks carry different diseases and can be found in every state in the United States which makes it all the more important to protect, not only ourselves, but our pets as well.

Whether you’re enjoying your yard, hiking, hunting, camping or otherwise in the outdoors, it is recommended by the CDC that people:

Avoid areas with high grass and walk in the center of trails when hiking.

Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents which can be found by using the EPA’s helpful search tool where you can find the product that fits your individual needs and be sure to always follow product instructions.

It's best to use products that contain permethrin to treat clothing and gear, such as boots, pants, socks and tents. Some of the necessary clothing can be found that is pre-treated with permethrin.

Dogs are very susceptible to tick bites and to some of the diseases caused by ticks. Be careful as they may bring ticks inside your home as well. Your veterinarian can give you advice on the best tick prevention for your dog.

It's important to shower as soon as possible after being outdoors to wash off and search for and find ticks before they have a chance to bite you.

Do a body tick check using a mirror to view all parts of your body as well as your children's bodies as soon as you are back inside. Remove any ticks as soon as possible.

To kill ticks on dry clothing tumble dry for 10 minutes on highest heat.
