Olavinlinna - Scenic St. Olaf's Castle in Savonlinna, Finland
We searched for a place to go that wasn't too far out from Mikkeli, and we chose Savonlinna. It's mainly because we wanted to check out St Olaf's Castle that we saw really nice photos online.
We booked OnniBus rather early and we reached Savonlinna after an hour and a half of travelling. There are many scenic lakes around the area and we managed to catch glimpses of them on the bus ride en route.
You can choose to take a slow boat ride around and it will pass by the castle, but the trade off is that you won't be able to get off the boat to walk around the castle. We opted to stroll there instead.

It was quite empty in the castle at that time and I was not sure if it was even in operation. I'm thinking that this might not be their peak period in terms of tourists, so extra staff presence wasn't necessary. The weather was still rather warm, and I had wished I brought my singlets from Singapore. After winter it also seemed that all the flies and bugs that were dormant suddenly came to life to disturb me.
We walked around within the castle and there was one air conditioned area that had a TV! It looks like I was watching Television inside a cave. They were showing a documentary about the castle and I watched intently.
There was nothing much within the castle itself, just a souvenir shop and a cafe. We decided to head out to get some nice photos.
There were many birds around the castle and we managed to spot seagulls (the noisiest), ducks, mallards, crows, geese, as well as their young-uns.
I checked to see if there was anyone else who visited this area on @steemitworldmap but I guess I am the first! Take a look at the image from the world map below. Olavinlinna is also marked as a 'castle' landmark!
Savonlinna is a relaxing place to visit. Take a stroll around, and enjoy the pace of life. It's rather calm and tranquil besides the noisy seagulls that try to fly in to you from time to time.

Looks like a cool castle. But aren't they all :) There is a St. Olaf's College in Minnesota. I think both my boys got accepted but neither attended.

Actually we wanted to visit this Olaf Castle for a funny reason. There is a character called Olaf in Snoopy, and we thought it was quite funny
