RE: Will we see a .steem domain?

in #steempress6 years ago

there is Namecoin (.bit) for decentralized DNS, it was one of the first early bitcoin clones and is still a thing. Unfortunately, the .bit TLD was never accepted bei ICANN, because there can be anonymous domain owners and there is no centralized whois database. So you need a DNS client or DNS resolver server that supports the Namecoin blockchain as a bridge.
The same principle could be applied to .steem.

Sort:

I guess it's more similar to Tor's .onion in that sense. It's sad that ICANN blocked the effort just because it's unregulatable (kinda the point). I wonder what the potential for abuse would be, though.

the potential for abuse is massive, and it's a pity that people abuse such wunderful technology.
I wish there was censorship resistance WITHOUT abusive shit. Dreaming of an internet without censorship and without hate speech.

Hmmm. Sometimes I judge how resistant a system is by how deep the abuse is in the system. If it cannot be brought down despite how disgusting it is, it's pretty resilient and to be trusted!

I've seen that Steemit is very censorable (not Steem but Steemit). The image host and proxies are Steemit's in most cases* and heavily flagged posts get hidden (both greyed out during the flagging and afterwards due to low reputation). If Steemit doesn't want something being seen, it just deletes the images from the servers and hides the links that are inconvenient.

* Busy, Steemit and Steempeak use Steemitimages as their default image CDN. This makes it so that if an image is deleted from the CDN, the original image cannot be seen unless you're accessing the blockchain some other way. I bet Partiko and many other dApps use Steemitimages as well.

It's safer in a "we take care of you" way, but centralised safety is not at all censorship resistant.

you can always use your own condenser or view the raw blockchain...
It's actually good to have the ability to downvote/flag shit content.
That is what curation is for.

the largest is the same type of abuse steem had, domains such as Amazon were taken

I miss namecoin. There is still a dedicated dev team(probably funded by the early times of bitcoin) but a browser such as Brave or Gab needs to add them default for it to really work.
