Manga Review: Kingdom
Kingdom is an historical action manga that's been running for more than 10 years. I don't read too much manga that aren't complete but this one is an exception because of its mature contents and action driven story.
It's a shame that it's not getting the attention it deserve because I could say that this is at least can stand by side by side with Naruto and One Piece.
Kingdom Plot
The story's setting is during the warring states period of China. It's about Xin and Piao, 2 war orphans who are dreaming of rising up from being slaves into great general of the heavens and improve their life.
As they were training, a minister of the king of Qin (their state) took a liking to Piao and he was taken to the palace for unknown purposes leaving Xin alone as a slave.
A few months later, Piao returned to Xin and on the verge of death, instructed Xin to go to a certain village until he dies. Wanting to fulfill his best friend's last wish, Xin traveled to the village only to meet another person that looks like Piao and later did he find out that he was the king of Qin. Xin also discovered that his best friend was tasked as a double to save the king.
Kingdom Review
At first, I thought that this was some kind of a rags to riches story because there was a servant and a king that looked alike but I was so so wrong because this manga is full of action and realism.
It is set during the times of war so there's a lot of maturity here especially during battles. There's decapitation for almost every chapters, rape by soldiers to ordinary villagers, anything that could happen during a war happens here.
The story is also wonderful because it doesn't just revolve around war and fighting but politics as well because the 2 main characters are a soldier trying to become a general and a king who inherit the throne at a young age.
It has more than 500 chapters and still ongoing. There is an anime and a live action short movie about Kingdom which I haven't watched yet.
