Trip Status #13 Erbil |

Trip Summary

We've arrived in Iraq Kurdistan capital city Erbil (ھەولێر) after cycling through some wet and snowy weather. We arrived on March 7th after cycling a further 1850 km, bringing our total to 14355 km. On this route we saw the lush green landscape again, climbing some tough hills and entering the safest part of Iraq.

Don't mind the big gap... (We took the bus because of rain)

Just a stone's throw away to Europe

Bike Crash

We'll start with the worst story first. In Ahwaz we met two locals who hopped out of their car as we were cycling to a camping spot. After exchanging a few greetings and selfies, we were kindly offered a place at the guy's home. By chance they were thinking about going on a tour themselves!

Both of them were part of the Ahwaz Mountain Biking group. They are a big inclusive group with at least 5 female cyclists. It's good to see female cyclists because they are very restricted here, and when they do cycle solo they'll be approached and harassed by men.

On the last day, the group planned to cycle with us to Shoush (100 km away) with a car escort carrying our bags. We were all going fast, it felt like we were flying without our bags. But with great speed there's an increased risk of a crash.

About halfway through, one of the cyclist abruptly stopped to get their wheels pumped, without telling those behind they were going to stop. Matt and Pheng were following behind closely, Matt narrowly misses their bike, but Pheng only had ½ seconds to react before impact.

We crashed.

No one was hurt, thankfully, but Pheng's bike suffered damages to the front wheel, front rack and frame. It was only noticed a few days later. With the cash we had received in Shiraz we were able to get the repairs done before leaving Iran. Instagram Story of the frame getting repaired.

(Instagram)

Before... And after

Inspiring Host

In Khorramabad we stayed with a host who is raising his daughter bilingual. Determined to speak English after an encounter with a tourist 8 years ago, he started studying English all by himself. He didn't attend university and sells vegetable off the truck.

We arrived at their home on the daughter's 3rd birthday. She was shy at first, but after some time she started playing and talking to us. It was a good opportunity for the father and daughter to practice their English. The amount of vocabulary the daughter knew surprised us.

Usually a family becomes bilingual after they have migrated to another country. As with Pheng's family they spoke Khmer and English at home. This family however was different, the father is putting in extra efforts to speak English at home, together with his wife raising their daughter in Farsi and English.

Kurds in Kurdistans

The Kurdish people are found in four countries: Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey. Unfortunately they were not given an area to call home so their people were split apart by many borders.

In west Iran we entered the first Kurdish region: Kurdistan and Kermanshah province. After that we got to Iraqi Kurdistan, then later we will go to Turkish Kurdistan. Due to ongoing conflicts, we are skipping Syria.

Never thought we'd see a sign for going to Baghdad

The last place before Sulaymaniyah was liberated was the torture/prison complex

Kurds in Iraq were very øppreꙅꙅed under the previous Iraqi government. The fighters Peꙅʜ𝕞erᎶa were hunted, but now they stand proud protecting their people in this very autonomous region. With their free visa policy, we were able to enter the northern region of Iraq for 30 days free. This helped us a lot in terms of distance and weather.

Going through Iraq Kurdistan allowed us to explore a new region, learn about the people, and share to the world that life still goes on in this war torn area.

What's next?

We'll continue towards Turkey and make our way towards Istanbul. It'll be our last Asian country before reaching Europe! We're really excited about reaching our new continent that we hope to live in the next few years.
