For the last month of 2018 we cycled through the province of Yazd and Kerman. In this region we passed many ruins. They were beautiful, broken, being re-built, and… brown.

Rich Person's Home

For morning tea one time we went inside an abandoned castle spotted from the highway (32.4395, 52.403682). It still had 4 walls standing and was easy to access from the road. We put the water on for tea and started exploring the place. There were so many rooms and walkways we lost count, every turn revealing more to explore. Some building still had roof and was cool inside. Other areas had walls and roof collapsed in. As there were no information about this place on any of our map apps, we could only imagine what each room was used for.

We asked a local what it could be, and was told it was one of the many housing complex remaining from a very rich family in the past.

Pigeon Tower

In the town of Ajbeh (32.440069, 52.378912) there were many round towers scattered on the parched desert terrain. The towers were used by farmers back in the days to collect the bird droppings as fertilizer. Nowadays they stand around waiting for a few tourists to stop by and take photos.

We explored inside a free one but it was very broken. The stairs leading up to the second floor was barely even, and the second floor had places where it had collapsed. Matt was more daring and climbed up to the top floor. He got the view and quickly came back down. Thankfully we didn't smell any of the droppings.

Wind Catcher

The province of Yazd and Kerman experience very hot summers. One of the innovative cooling solutions are these tall towers with long parallel windows. They are usually square based and contain windows to catch wind from all four sides. The wind is redirected down to the base of the building bringing in fresh cool air.

In the city of Yazd you'll see these iconic catchers everywhere, even at modern architecturally designed hotels (top picture featured). There was one reservoir in the "old" Yazd city with four catchers for maximum cooling! Nowadays it is open as a tourist attraction.

Bazaar's Main Intersection

Did you know that "bazaar" is a borrowed word from Farsi? Due to the hot weather in summer, the alleyways in the bazaar are roofed to provide shade for the shoppers. Between each shop is a dome shape ceiling with a hole in the middle for skylight.

The main intersection of the bazaar is called "Chohor-soogh" meaning four ways. The ceiling on the Chohor-soogh has much more decoration as it has the most foot traffic. This was photographed in Kashan's old bazaar (33.984253, 51.448742).

你知道“巴扎”是波斯语的借词吗？由于夏季炎热的天气，集市上的小巷屋顶为购物者提供遮荫。每个商店之间都是圆顶形天花板，中间有一个洞，用于天窗。

Sleeping in a Castle

We shared a memorable experience cycling from Isfahan to Yazd with two other cyclists from Netherlands. There was an abandoned castle or caravanserai along the route which had provided shelter for many travellers before. The Khargooshi Caravanserai (32.19842, 53.191147) is a tall castle in the middle of nowhere, or most likely an old Silk Road trade route.

We arrived just after sunset but took out the torches to explore every room and hallway. The way up to the rooftop was eventually discovered and we crawled up for a peek. We had the castle all to ourselves that night and it was an experience we'll never forget.

This country is full of history and relics. We have been very lucky to have the opportunity to see these first hand. Sadly some of them are left as is, and time is ticking so they might not be here forever!
