Steps for the cultivation of ginger:

  • As I said at the beginning, ginger is easy to grow, the first thing to do is get some fresh rhizomes from someone who grows them, or simply buy them in supermarkets or vegetable stores. It is important to choose a fleshy and fresh rhizome, preferably those that have growth buds, these shoots are easy to identify because they have small horned sword forms at the end of a piece.

  • Once you have the rhizomes, the next step is to soak them in water overnight at room temperature with a few drops of chlorine or vinegar, to remove all impurities and bacteria.
  • Then we look for the container where we are going to grow the ginger, the pot can be 30 to 40 cm deep, but the most important thing is that it is wide enough, since the rhizome grows horizontally.
  • Prepare the pot, placing a good fertilized substrate, preferably mix sand with composting material, this substrate should be light and loose, we should avoid the use of clay soils.
  • Then the rhizomes are placed directly in the pots on the ground, the tip of the yolk should be up, we sink the piece a little on the ground and that's it.

  • Regarding the risks, they should be light without excess water to avoid puddles, the important thing is that the soil remains moist.
  • If we want to plant several plants in other pots or directly in the garden, it is advisable to place the rhizome in the pot first and wait for the roots and buds to begin to emerge, then remove the rhizome from the soil. The next thing is to cut the rhizome to separate the shoots. Then place these germinated sprouts in several pots or directly on the garden floor. This is a way to get other plants.
  • The cultivation of ginger grows well in our gardens or in pots, as this plant requires in environments with little sun and temperatures between 20 and 25 ° C. It is not advisable to grow ginger in climates with temperatures below 10 ºC.

When to harvest the ginger?

Ginger can be harvested when we observe that its leaves become yellowish. The estimated time for the harvest is 9 to 10 months, which the development of the plant and its roots, will depend on the care it has received.
