The brain in your gut
Here is an interesting talk by Herbert Watzke about the idea of the brain in our gut. He suggests that cooking is the most important technology that has influenced our evolution over time. Cooking led to the ability to absorb more energy from our food, thus helping to 'feed' the hungry organ that is the brain. This courtesy of TED

From the Chinese Medicine perspective, cooking food is vital to helping unleash the latent Qi that is present in food, which we require to help us live and perform basic physiological tasks. It is also necessary to get this "post-natal Qi" (the Qi we acquire during our lifetime) in order to keep us healthy and prevent illness from overcoming us.
Raw food and cold food is generally seen as a no-no, as it requires more energy to absorb the Qi than what it will give us. This talk puts the same idea into a modern, Western Scientific frame.
