Science at home! Fun homemade experiments for the little ones. Let's learn about bridges and their structures!

in #steempress5 years ago (edited)

Hello friends of @steemiteducation, when we are children we are full of curiosity, we are interested in learning and experiencing everything we see and that is an opportunity that we as parents have to take advantage of, we can not stop educating the little ones through activities funny that catch your attention.

The experiments at home are a source of knowledge, super fun and educational. Today we will carry out a fun and very simple experiment where the children will learn about the bridges and their structures, they will learn how the form will increase their resistance.

The fact that a bridge is resistant depends on the material with which it is built and the shape it has. With this activity the children will have fun building and testing the resistance of several bridges made with a single sheet of paper and without using scissors or adhesive tape. You will be surprised how resistant a simple sheet can be with the help of a suitable design.

Materials:

  • Two supports (stirrups) made with books, containers, chairs, boxes ...

  • A sheet of paper for each bridge.

  • Objects to check the resistance of the bridge.

Now if we are going to have fun!

Let's build a bridge with a sheet of paper!!

Process:

  • Make several designs and place them on the stirrups.

  • Study the resistance of the bridge by placing objects on it until it collapses: toys, coins, pebbles, pencils ...

Design 1: without making modifications.

Ups I almost fell!
It endured very little but it helped us to discover that by decreasing the light (in our case the distance between two stirrups) the resistance increases.
Design 2: paper folded in half.

Resist something else we can place other things more!

Design 3: with a wall on each side

We are on the good way!

Design 4: with walls finished in a triangular profile.

This one resists much more.
We keep improving, it seems that the triangle resists a lot.
Design 5: with many fan-shaped folds.

What resistance!

Great! It's amazing what a few triangles can do.

What happen?

The triangle is one of the most important forms in engineering and architecture. Take a look around and you will see that the triangle is present in many structures (electrical towers, walkways, scaffolding, cranes, supports for roofs ...). The triangle is the only geometric figure that does not lose its shape when a load is applied to one of its vertices. In addition, the applied load is distributed from a point, the vertex, to a much larger area. But that's not all, a triangle is considerably lighter and cheaper than a solid structure or a rectangle or square.   Triangles are not only used to design large resistant structures, look at a corrugated cardboard box, what do you see?

The triangles provide resistance to cardboard

As you can see the Home Experiments can be very useful when using them as a teaching and learning tool, we as parents have the responsibility to offer our children the best possible education, for which we should look for the most appropriate strategies, our little ones They are full of curiosity and they love seeing new things and that is a point in our favor, the Experiments Cases gives us a universe of our knowledge. The opportunity to learn while having fun, just do not think about it anymore and put it into practice.
