Dronelife - Guru Maharishi Mahesh 'Beatles' ashram of Rishikesh ๐Ÿ˜steemCreated with Sketch.

๐ŸŒ Location: The Beatles Ashram, Rishkiesh, India

This is the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Ashram or the 'Beatles Ashram' as it is also known. It is located on the less populated south east side of the river Ganges at Rishikesh. Maharishi Mahesh was a world famous guru known for the development of Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique. This Guru became world famous in the 60's when the Beatles visited the Ashram to live and learn by his teachings. He became the Beatles 'spiritual advisor' and was a great influence in their lives and songs. I also suspect the Beatles did a lot of drugs their too!

The ashram used to be fully functional and train many TM students until the Indian government revoke their land licence for the operation of the ashram. From what I know the Guru tried and tried to keep the place open but was eventually forced out to other, less inspiring premises. This whole area now lies within a National Reserve called the Rajaji National Park. If you go deep into the forest here you'll encounter elephants and if you are (un)lucky tigers.

Whilst I was staying in Rishikesh I had to visit this place and it was a good day's exploration, there is so much there! What is left now is the shell of a once magnificent ashram complex that has been overtaken by forest and animals. Abandoned buildings, broken glass, cracked porcelain and weathered doors are everywhere. Nothing really remains apart from graffiti that has been beautifully painted across many of the existing buildings... Below is a collection of some of my favorites that I came across during my visit.

You can see the artists Facebook Page where he documents all of the art. It really is amazing. Lots of travellers have too left their own inspirational messages, marks and images on the walls. Enjoy the imagery!

Great pictures of beautiful abandoned buildings! Iโ€™ve not see too much like this on steem, but I remember @slobberchops does posts of abandoned buildings in UK. Thanks for sharing the images.
