TEACHER ROOM: Importance of memory in the learning process

Memory is one of the most amazing properties of the human mind.

Memory is a form of mental reflection that consists of fixing, preserving and then reproducing past experience, allowing its reuse in activity or return to the sphere of consciousness.

The relevance of this topic is due to the fact that memory is the basis of the child's abilities, is the condition for learning, the acquisition of knowledge and skills, that is, the memory of a primary school student is the component psychological principle of educational and cognitive activity.

Teachers must build a learning process in such a way that it achieves the maximum memorization of the material and the most accurate reproduction of the students, and this is only possible when the psychological processes acquire an arbitrary character.

People need to know a lot and remember a lot, every year more and more. Books, tapes, tape recorders, cards in libraries, the computers help a person to remember, but the main thing is his own memory. Without it, the normal functioning of the personality and its development is impossible.

The process of memory development in children will be developed successfully if teachers and parents develop it, taking into account the individual characteristics of a specific child, using the recommendations, to use various techniques that promote good memorization.

The main memory processes are:

  • memorization,
  • preservation,
  • recognition,
  • reproduction and
  • forgetting of information.
The involuntary memorization is to remember without a pre-established objective, without using any method and manifestation of voluntary efforts. While arbitrary memorization is a special and complex mental activity, subordinated to the task of remembering.

The preservation of what is learned depends on the depth of understanding. Well-intentioned material is best remembered. Preservation also depends on the configuration of the personality. The material that is important to a person is not forgotten.

Recognition are the restoration processes of what was perceived before. The difference between recognition and reproduction is that recognition occurs when you find the object again, when you perceive it again, but reproduction occurs in the absence of the object. Reproduction can refer to movements, actions, expressed in the formation of habits and abilities, to the visual content of consciousness, to thoughts and feelings.

Forgetting is a natural process. Much of what is fixed in memory, in time, to some extent forgotten. Forgetting can be due to several factors. The first and most obvious of them is time.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MEMORY

At the earliest school age, memory, like all other mental processes, undergoes significant changes. The child's memory gradually acquires the characteristics of arbitrariness, being regulated and consciously mediated.

The age-specific characteristic of memory development in elementary school children is that their voluntary attention is relatively undeveloped, in contrast to involuntary care. But it is extremely difficult to concentrate the pupil of primary school, especially if the work is monotonous and uninteresting. Over time, the memory becomes arbitrary and manageable.

Main types of memory in children: imaginative and emotional. A first or second grade child will first remember what seems bright and unexpected, and will cause an emotional response.

Children are easier to remember specific objects, events and faces than descriptions, explanations and definitions. However, figurative memory has certain limitations. Often, in the child's memory, some details may be omitted, and some may be exaggerated.

The arbitrary attention of the child is rather the result of communication with adults, so it is formed in social contact. And if at the beginning, due to certain characteristics of the development of memory, the smallest school children can only perform the tasks that adults do, little by little children develop the ability to work independently memorizing the material.

The improvement of memory at the earliest school age is mainly due to the acquisition in the course of learning activities of various forms and memorization strategies related to the organization and processing of memorized material.

The process of developing logical memory in smaller schoolchildren should be specially organized, since in the overwhelming majority of children of this age independently they do not use methods of semantic processing of the material and with the objective of memorizing the recourse to a proven medium: repetition.

The improvement of memory in children of school age is mainly due to the acquisition during the training activities of the different memorization methods, which are associated with the organization and treatment of the material.

Memory is a complex mental process, whose research is dedicated to the work of many scientists. Its results already allow effective training in memory development using non-traditional forms of information processing and storage. In this sense, in the preparation of the classes, the teacher must take into account not only the physiological aspect of the functioning of the memory process, but also the psychological one.

The teacher needs the student to memorize the material and play it. Therefore, the teacher should pay special attention to ensure that younger students learn to memorize the correction and significantly the educational material. It is necessary to systematically familiarize students with the methods of rational memorization, without counting on the fact that students, as they acquire experience in teaching, find themselves. And parents, trying to develop the memory of their child, keeping in mind that, regardless of whether a good or bad memory in a child, the overload is harmful.

For the development of the memory of the youngest students, we offer the following exercises:

  • Read regularly.
  • Use the dictionary. To look up the meaning of words and understand what is read, the dictionary is a great friend in this mission.
Do not forget the importance that you have for the student, understand what you are studying. This is a very important step to work on long-term memory. However, if the child does not understand the subject, he will simply work in the medium term, during the exam he will answer only what his memory remembers.
In conclusion, I would like to point out that memory is of great importance in people's lives and that it is difficult to overestimate it. Memory is the basis of a person's life, their development and the conservation of their abilities, is a condition for learning, the acquisition of knowledge, skills and abilities.
Thanks to his memory, especially to his constant improvement, a man once stood out from the animal kingdom and reached the heights of psychological development in which he finds himself today.
The subsequent progress of humanity is a constant updating of its memory that is as important as human development in the past, since memory not only includes the previous processes, but also its dynamic characteristics, for example, the speed of access to the necessary information.
