Decent into Crank Caverns & the Mysterious Subterranean Church

in #steempress6 years ago

So after a sudden urge i got today following an illness and watching the film Decent i decided to get some fresh air and take some photographs and record some sounds by myself on a visit to Crank Caverns which is the common local name of the remains of the Rainford delph quarry in Crank near St.Helens Merseyside in the UK and is network of underground tunnels and caverns which are now daubed in modern artwork in extensive woodland and has some very intresting storys and is apparently the location of a subterranean church that was allegedly found in the late 18th century.

The day turned out to be quite a spooky and eeri experiance and sent shivers up my spine just looking at these pictures again even in the day especially by yourself in the middle of nowhere.

As the local story goes a group of children decided to explore the limestone caverns in the area and vanished. One child survived and told a terrifying tale about small old men with beards who killed his three friends and chased him. The petrified child stumbled over human bones in the caves and finally managed to scramble through an opening to the surface as a hand was grabbing at his ankle.

The local authorities were concerned as a number of people had gone missing in the area near the cave entrances, so two heavily armed soldiers descended into the caverns with torches and claimed they found a heap of human bones and also found the ruins of an ancient church of some unknown denomination with the interior of the church lit by three large candles and gargoyles that formed part of an altar.

The soldiers throughout the exploration said they felt as if they were being watched and claimed they also heard voices speaking in an unknown language.
One story also said that a child's head was found in a one of the caves, along with evidence of cannibalism.
After a second investigation, the caves were found to be collapsed or gunpowder had been used to seal them but no one knows who did this however the main entrance to this part of the cave system which is locally called the mouse hole was sealed and locked but has now been broken into and is now freely open to explore if you dare and so the mysterious riddle of the underground church of crank caverns remains unsolved to this day and i wont be going down the mouse hole to find out! haha

The mouse hole entrance now open

Kool Cheers @theunion All best! :)

CREEPY, I have been into some sketchy caves but this one is too much, I would not enter, it's like the mines of Moria or something...

Thankyou @friendly-fenix yes very spooky, i even felt nervous at home by myself after visting these caves, left me with a strange and eerie vibe.

I wonder what dark forces lurk down there...

/FF

Indeed some dark stories FF that we will never know and a very intriguing place and i did a little more research and they are alot older than mine workings, seems the catholics being persecuted by King Henry 8 around 1491–1547 took shelter in the caverns and conducted secret mass there, but mining on the quarry only began in about 1730. Some stories report the caves running to amongst other places, Up Holland in Lancashire, Church of St Mary, Lowe House in St. Helens and Moss Bank in St. Helens, another stated that there was in fact a tunnel running some seven miles from St. Helens Town Hall to Crank Caverns in order to conduct 'secret' hangings! The mystery depends like these caves!

Interesting...

I almost feel like going there now...
There is a similar cave in Malta where they found loads of bones...
Also a creepy story... https://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/forum/topic/176068-malta-cave-and-missing-children/
