There's no referral link or bonuses. This is purely a free to play browser game which would get you somewhere decent in 1-3 months of playing if you're into drugwars type of gameply where you wait for upgrades, spy, upgrade skills, ships, and shit. Only alliances that are on the top 8 will get rewarded with Steem from the community reward pool. Given that most of the players are dead, it's fairly easy to rise with some active members because it's all point system. Then of course there's some chats with people who are also into NextColony.
