Point to Point Protocol Persuasion

PPP vs. HDLC (Wide Area Network Protocols)

Requirements of the Discussion

The scenario is this, A network engineering supervisor recently attended a networking conference where Layer 2 protocols were discussed. He knows that you have Cisco equipment, but he would also like to offer security and advanced TCP/IP options and controls on that same equipment by using the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). After researching the PPP protocol, you find it offers some advantages over the HDLC protocol, currently used on your network. Create a list of advantages and disadvantages of using the HDLC vs. PPP protocols. When comparing the two protocols, include the following

• Ease of configuration
• Adaptability to non-proprietary network equipment
• Security options
• Bandwidth usage and compression
• Bandwidth consolidation

The problem scenario can be found at the top of this blog, you may download it for free

  • We will be able to describe the benefits of using PPP which is Point to Point Protocol over HDLC in a Wan.
  • Learn the Differences between two Protocols in a WAN.
  • Advantages and Disadvantages between the two Protocols.

What is PPP or Point to Point Protocol?

  • The Point to point Protocol is providing a standard method in transporting multi protocol data over from point to point links.

What is HDLC Protocol?

  • HDLC or High-Level Data Link Control is defining the rules for transmitting data between network points. So the data in our HDLC is organized into units called frames and will be sent across networks to specific destinations.

Topic HDLC PPP
Ease of configuration The advatange of the HDLC is the standard or default to all Cisco equipments. For PPP. It is also an advantage for the ease of configuration because of simplicity. But it depends from the PPP options that to be chosen.
Adaptability to Non-Properietary Network Equipment One of the disadvatanges of HDLC is that, it is not adaptable to other non-Cisco devices. Therfore, it can only be used for Cisco Equipments. PPP had an advantage of adaptability, because it is adaptable to other non-proprietary network equipment. Non-Cisco Equipments, but related to Computer Networks.
Security Options In a HDLC, Security Options are not offered. PPP has a Security Option called CHAP it is an (encrypted and secure link Passwords) or PAP (non-encrypted link passwords) CHAP stands for challenge handshake authentication and can be used most every VPNs. PAP stands for Password Authentication Protocol, both are used to authenticate PPP session and used in also VPNs. But PAP protocol is subject to numerous attacks.
Bandwidth Usage and Compression The HDLC is a Standard TDM which stands for Time division multiplexing, TDM is a communication process that will transmit digital signals over a common channel, and there will be no such thing as compression. In a PPP, compression is available.
Bandwidth Consolidation The advantage of a HDLC protocol has already a standard serial bandwidth used by only one connection. But PPP is better. In a PPP, there are different connections that can be bundled to serve a higher bandwidth and traffic throughput.

We can easily understand what bandwidth compression is, it means that it reduce the bandwidth needed to send an amount of data in a given time, and also we know that these two out of three types of WAN protocols, I think it is better to choose to Point to Point protocol because it brings more depth and wider features it offered.
