Bulgaria and Greece will build railway corridor between six major ports

Bulgaria and Greece will build railway corridor connecting the ports of Thessaloniki, Kavala and Alexandroupolis with Bourgas, Varna and Rousse. A Memorandum of Understanding on the construction of the railway line was signed today in Kavala, Greece, by the Bulgarian Prime Ministers Boyko Borisov and Greek leader Alexis Tsipras, the press service of the Council of Ministers has announced.
The rail is planned to be managed by a joint venture between the two countries.
"With the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Bulgaria and Greece, we continue to connect the transport and energy hubs, the opportunities for development of tourism, the business, the movement of people and capital in our region", said the Bulgarian prime Minister Boyko Borisov. He expressed confidence that the project would be protected by the European Commission (EC), where funding would be sought.
Boyko Borisov pointed out that will ask for a meeting with EC President Jean-Claude Juncker in October, where will present ideas for regional development and seek support for the railway corridor.
According to the Greek Prime Minister, signing of today's Memorandum of Understanding is important not only for both countries but also for the region. "We are achieving cardinal issues and we can be a role model", said Alexis Tsipras. "The treaty is a powerful lever for the region's movement as a whole. This is a big step so that the Balkan countries are a European area of ​​security and stability", added he.
The Greek Prime Minister noted that new horizons are emerging on Europe's energy map, adding that these topics are to be discussed at ministerial level. Alexis Tsipras also confirmed the desire for close cooperation within the Bulgarian presidency of the Council of the EU, which Greece regards as a Balkan presidency.
