(MIMENTO VIVERE) Magellan's Cross, Cebu City
This is the famous Magellan's Cross. It is said that this was the cross that was brought by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. This monument reminds me of the dark past that made the Philippines what it is now today. From religion to politics, this cross is a metaphor to the burden that we are bringing. We haven't moved on since then. Up until now, we are still slaves of our Hispanic past. This cross reminds me of a cult shoved down to our throats, reminds me of the blood being shed in our shores, and an unnecessary force that we don't even need in our society but was introduced by the West as "necessary for a civilization". Still, I am hopeful that we can liberate ourselves from this cultural crisis and move forward as a New Filipino, diverse and multi-cultural.
