RE: A Guide To Surviving The September School Holidays Activities In Auckland New Zealand

in #steemparents7 years ago

As a kid, mumble mumble years ago, we could go to Cockle bay , Orririe ? Point, dig up a feed of cockles, find enough driftwood on the beach and a bit of corrigated iron. Start a fire, put the irin over the fire, add a handful of cockles on top. When the cockles open they are ready to eat. An incomming tide was better from memory, less sand in the cockles, .
One of the beaches around that area had some great caves to explore as well.

Hey Len, you mean last school holidays right.....
Don't know if the kids can still do that, not surer if I would trust the kids to do that unsupervised hehe.... Was the caves around by eastern beach under the cliffs?
Funny haven't thought of trying to get cockles in Auckland, as kids we used to go up North to do that.

where else would you go for cockles than cockle bay?
The caves were between there and Orere point from memory, mumble mumble years ago.
There used to be good rock oysters there as well.
Another interesting scramble, at low tide, from Oprere to Kawakawa bayaround the rocks.
we were about 15 when we did it, probably pay to go along with the camera even if for no other reason.
All that coast down to Miranda/Kiaua was good cockle/pipi country then, a good "wear them out" beach walk if nothing else.

Why have I never thought of that haha - just didn't sink in
The waters around there are not that great anymore some where shut off some years ago, not surer if reopened, because of pollution.
If we go near Miranda no one will be getting out until at the hot pools lol.

that will fill in a day, only 15 more to go.

hehe yeap, well everyone is putting in their 2 cents worth for the school holidays so I think we wont have an issue finding things to do.
