Torture chambers in the castle of Mazze'

in #steemleo5 years ago (edited)

Mazza castle was built in the XII century on the site of ancient Roman ruins. The small size of the castle was rebuilt in the XIV century in the count's residence. Another reconstruction of the castle in the XV century turned it into a fortress for military purposes, and after the Renaissance, the castle was intended for entertainment and reception. The owners of the castle in the XII – XIX centuries were Earls Valperga, which, in 1850, changed the family Brunetta d Uso.

Count Eugenio Brunetta d Uso was the founder of the Italian Olympic movement and the first Secretary General of the international Olympic games. At different times in the castle stayed: king Vittorio Emanuele II di Savoia, count Cavour, Tsar Nicholas II, Benito Mussolini and many other famous personalities. The castle has an underground Museum, which presents torture chambers, original instruments of torture and a chapel of the death penalty.
