Kitchen Witch Thursdays - Easy Stromboli

in #steemkitchen6 years ago (edited)

A dish similar to Italian food, but actually origiating in America, likely by Italian-American immigrants. A place near my grandmothers used to make these, and she basically learned the recipe from them and it's spread through my family ever since. While typical restruant style ones stick to Italian cheeses and meats, making one at home means you can put whatever you want in there!

Also, this is a contest entry for the latest contest from steeemkitchen, focusing on main dishes this time around.

You'll need the following;

  • Pizza crust
  • Cheese
  • Meat
  • Cut up vegetables

I didn't include vegetables, but some people like them in their stromboli and I've found that things like black olives and mushrooms are pretty common. I chose canned dough becuase it's easier than making my own, havarti and muenster cheese because those are flavors I like, and some chipotle seasoned chicken lunch meat because lunch meat is cheap and the chipotle seasoning would add a bit of a spicy kick to the flavors.

But honestly, anything you want to put in there is perfect. I normally would include black olives as well in mine, but I forgot to get them at the store ):

Start by preheating your oven to 400 degrees.

Then roll out your pizza dough onto a greased cookie sheet. Layer your ingredients as you like; I did the havarti, then the lunch meat, then the muenster on top.

Roll your dough up tightly. Make sure to seal the ends and any other gaps to prevent the filling leaking out. Put it seam side up so the pressure isn't on the seam like it is on the bottom or side when you're baking it and that'll prevent a good amount of filling leak as well.

Throw that bad boy in the oven for ~30 minutes (you can add more if that's not enough time but 30 minutes is a good starting point) and let it bake.

Pull it out once it's done and let it sit 10-15 minutes to cool down. Trust me, if you cut into it right away the whole thing will lose it's shape and that's that. Mine always seem to collapse a little in the middle for some reason, but I didn't have any major bits of filling leak so I'm alright with that.

Slice up and enjoy! I always like eating an end cap and one good slice when I make this, because that's usually enough to fill me up as a dinner and a single slice is great for lunch :D
