Telecommunications: Usefulness And Dangers Of Living Close To A Cellphone Tower (Mast)

The world as they say is a global village and one of the most useful tools in our global village is the Cellphone. Cellphones have been around for several decades now, starting from the 80's actually it was in 1974 that the first recognizable cellphone(mobile phone) was created by John F. Mitchell Source and Martin Cooper Sourceof the Motorola company but it wasn't until 1983 that the DynaTac 8000x Sourcewhich was the first commercially available cellphone was sold. And since the 80's the cellphone has experienced an astronomical evolution from the DynaTac to our current day smartphones.

Before we talk about it's Usefulness and possible dangers we need to first know what a cell tower or Mast as locally called is.

What Is A Cell Tower

A cell tower is an elevated platform usually erected by a telecommunications company which houses electronic devices such as Antennas, Receivers, Transceivers, and many other electronic devices which are used for transmission from our cellphones to the towers and from there to our service providers. Incase you were wondering, the name cellphone is as a result of these cell towers.

Advantages/Usefulness Of Cell Towers

• Better Network
  People who live close to a cell tower of their network provider tend to enjoy far better network signal than those that live much farther from such cell towers. And for some people this better network strength could make a huge difference especially for those who use the network for business purposes.

• Lucrative
  This applies to those who own the property's which these cell towers are erected, it is said that the telecommunications companies pay hefty sums to have these tall structures erected and along with the benefit of a better network, you'd get paid. Now who wouldn't like that type of money?

Disadvantages/Fears Of Cellphone Towers

• Esthetically Unappealing
  Like I said earlier, cell towers are usually large, tall with receivers and other electronic devices on it, which to be honest isn't really a thing of beauty and to certain people they find it awful to look at.

• Health Implications
  Some studies have shown that living close to cell towers for long periods of time have been shown to have negative effects because of the radio waves which are constantly being emitted by these towers, some even claim it causes cancer. But these claims have not been agreed upon by all the experts in the field but like we know from the movie CONCUSSION, everyone doesn't need to agree before a work is true.

• Physical Danger
  As we all know, in this modern age people do crazy things all for internet fame, and some people climb these structures to perform stunts and could sometimes fall and hurt themselves. Another way a cell tower can be dangerous is in the case of natural events like tornadoes, earthquakes etc. such huge structures could fall and cause harm to their immediate surroundings and people around, so it's best to avoid being too close to huge structures like cellphone towers or similar structures like Bill boards.
