Bijloke Muziekcentrum
The Bijloke Muziekcentrum is the main (apart from the Grote kerk) music venue for Classical music in Gent, Belgium. It is a short walk away from the main train station of Ghent St Pieters. Quite a number of big name groups perform here in the large hall. There is also a smaller hall for chamber music ensembles.
As usual, I have no experience with what it sounds like from the audience, although I have to say, the seats look pretty uncomfortable!
On stage, the sound is great, especially with the acoustic shell in place. It is easy to hear across the stage and the sound of your instruments feels good. However, the weird thing is that they have an artificial acoustic.
I appreciate that some places need an artificial acoustic to help get the sound out off the stage (especially with non amplified music). However, for me it is really weird to be expecting a certain sound and feedback from the hall, and getting something totally different in return. Almost disorientating.
Anyway, I'm sure it is a system that works better for the audience, and so it is not my place to question!

What is an "artificial acoustic"?
They take the stage sound and then give it an acoustic tweak and then pipe it through to the audience combined with the original sound that comes from the stage.
So, in theory, you could make a dead space sound like a cathedral. For me it is incredibly disturbing as we train so much to play with the space that we perform in. So to have a different response from the hall is completely weird!
