Steemit Viking "not following anybody" Experiment Done + Introduction
The Steemit Viking project is here. A part of Odin's Eye - an offering to Steemit.
Since we are Vikings we are sailing above the waters of the Steemit world. There are many swimming about, and a lot to observe.
Sometimes when we put up our own unique content to Steemit we think we can help by adding data about our Steemit experience. Thus we have finished our first experiment and Steemit Viking has started.
"not following anybody" Experiment
We currently have over 600 followers. We were following over 700 people. We wanted to see how the Steemit experience would be like unfollowing everyone, so we unfollowed everyone we were following - which included the majority (if not all) of our followers.
The Experience
The first thing we noticed (obviously) was the fact we were seeing EVERYONE on the site. This is what we were hoping for...
There has been a lot more people who have joined Steemit - being so it seems hard to find people who might have been around a long time, but still are under radar that would be hard to find. So, we didn't like that. Also, people tend to post about the same things, and Vikings get bored easily so we missed having the creative ones popping out at us.
After awhile, we started feeling like people didn't want to follow us simply because we wouldn't follow them, so we saw people unfollow us... then a few days later follow us back...which is odd. Perhaps this is a bot thing, but it seems common though only a few and not a big deal.
However, we found that most people were loyal and stayed following us even though we weren't following them, and we liked this. Vikings like loyalty, and trading - we raid those not loyal. So, seeing loyalty was a motivator.
Some of the other observations with not following anyone is that our upvotes on posts seemed to have dropped, so perhaps there's a disconnection from people that happens and they don't get notified of your new post or something...a bug.
Conclusions and Actions
We Vikings find that it's better to start your own small clan of followers, and over time it will grow of loyal folk. Within that, that is where your support will be here on Steemit. Your audience.
Vikings travel better in large numbers. So, in conclusion to our experience with this experiment we've decided we will follow everyone who will follow us. If we are unfollowed, we will unfollow back.
We will follow all of those who we see upvote us, esp. And we are looking to experiment with our voting bot, and other things so upvoting Odin's Eye will beneficial to all - especially in due time.
