THE EYES EFFECT – A Part of my Life I won’t forget

Growing up in my house was something I never stopped being grateful about. The hard times, the flexing period, but I want to talk about this part of my life which I call The Eyes Effect period. In my neighborhood, a child who does not listen to his/her parent especially their mum, must always meet the rod, if you know what I mean. So children developed different senses and ways of listening to their mum communicate.
The Eye Effect
This is a particular kind of communication customized by moms in Nigeria. This was one of the best way my mom could get to me fast, my mom doesn't need to have those eyes you seeing above; because whatsoever I am doing, my focus and attention was on my mama, I never can tell if she might come out of thin air with a spank to my buttocks…well, my mom would always give me signs with her eyes and every sign has their various meaning, that right there is The Eye Effect. Let me give an example, there was this day we had visitors come to our home to say hello and congratulate the family. I was little then, but I’ve got the memory of it. As kids, you would always want to go close to the visitors because one way or the other, they will always have something brought to them. At that period, things were really hard, three square meals were a fantasy we all long for. So I went and stayed with the visitor expecting some goodies in return for my cute laughs. Just as I was at the verge of a breakthrough came my mom’s eye effect. Her eyes caught me, I could feel the eyes talking to my spirit, my soul. Three blinks of the eye, suddenly I became a programmer, I could decode the eye signal and it was saying to me “leave there now” three words, three blinks, I didn’t need a Joseph to come interpret this dream for me.

Even if in our heart, we said our mom was not being fair to us, with time we (me and my siblings) now understood that it was a way of protecting her kids and at the same time protecting the glory, honour and shame of the family.
Mama got different looks for every word she wanted to say to us in public, even at home. She has the slapping eyes look, where you got slapped even without touching you. She has the eye contact with a sarcastic smile, at that time this smile is not real, it could be real to the people around, but I know in my spirit that it’s not real. She got the go out and play outside look, I believe that look comes when she and dad are together, till date I don’t know why she gives me that look, maybe someone could tell me. She got the go do the dishes look and at that, if we fail to adhere to any of those looks and eye contact, she could slap you so fast you won’t even see it coming, you just hear someone else close to you crying, just like a bullet. She could slap you to another nationality e.g. slap you from Nigeria and you find yourself to be a Philippines boy/girl.
Growing up, I struggled to eat a square meal, that didn’t give me an excuse to go the wrong part, to go the negative way, because our parent taught us to be loyal, that’s why till date am still that good boy.
Thanks to @dobartim for bringing up inspiration like this, for making us share our life story on steemit.
Nice story, I can totally relate
thanks brov
Never underestimate the eye effect of an African mum. It is the most effecient coded means of communication in African homes especially Nigerian homes.
seriously brov, so efficient...it neva misses...thanks for your comment
Lol... Every nigerian mother can speak with their eyes. Where do they learn it?
I really can't answer that...I think its a gift all mothers are bestowed with...
Lol.. Every Nigerian child can relate to this or maybe those born before the 21st century.. That's another generation. Lol
And then if you don't want to conform to the effect. Well, your body go tell you.. Nice one boss.
hahaha...am tells ya. Your body go tell ya. this new generation won't understand this, they will even go as far as asking their mom, mom is there something wrong with your eyes?...hahhaha
Oh boy!!! I tell you😂😂

Oh lordie! Our Mums and their speaking eyes! I can totally relate! its kinda different nowadays though. As a Mother of 2 girls, 1 ten and the other eight, I can assure you that the new breed of children are bolder and way different from the way we were back then!
Case in point: we were at my husband's friend's place and we were being served lavishly by his wife. My husband and I ate well but ensured we were decent enough not to over eat. The girls copied us and I was so proud of them. We stopped taking anymore samples but then my youngest reached out for another delicious looking dessert...I gave her the look and I knew she would understand and stop the action but guess what she did??
She said out loud for all to hear, "Mum, please don't look at me like that nauuuu! I really want to taste this chocolate cake to know if it's as nice as the one Aunty Y*** bakes for us" Chai, I wanted to disappear, I was so embarrassed at her cunning disobedience! I jejely smiled at her and acted as if nothing happened. Trust na, my other daughter joined her as soon as she realized her sister's triumph.
When we got home, I reset both of them with some correct strokes of cane and thought it was over. Uhmmmm my brother, it wasn't ooo! The next Sunday, she went to meet the man's wife to ask if she was wrong to have eaten what she served. Of course the woman, not knowing which angle she was coming from, said not at all, and my daughter proceeded to tell her that she was wrong because she got beaten for eating it. The woman was hurt and came to confront me and I had to apologize and really explain... Chai!
Oh lordie...hahahahahahaha... @mosunomotunde... you killed me here with laugh. Truly, children of this age find it really hard to understand that effect, cos the world is going global...lol. Your cute sweet ladies, I bet the chocolate cake was really tempting and delicious...I guess I would rather taste that cake and collect reset beating, than go home and be having nightmare that I did not eat that delicious chocolate mixed with cream cake...I believe they would listen to you next time, as they wouldnt want to collect those beaten again...I hail thee 9ja mama...Thank you my lady for this wonderful long contribution...na better one post be this oOoo... ;-)
Lol... Thanks darling... You inspired the long reply o...I laughed so hard when I read your article and I just had to share that story
hahaha...@mosunomotunde making sense jor...That was the whole idea, for my story to make people that would take time to read it laugh...thanks for reading jare...I don miss that your smile...lol
