Unbeknown to these people, they rush through comments and spam 20 or more posts a day just posting: Great article, nice content, etc, thinking they are adding value.

This is not true, even though you earn for comments but this is not the right way to go about it. And like you also advised @biyanoor this is the quickest way to get flagged and thus repelling more and more potential friends, thus letting go of potential earnings for you.
