Steemit Sandwich Contest Week #85 - Hot Cross Bun Ice Cream SandwichsteemCreated with Sketch.

A Hot Cross Bun Ice Cream Sandwich was what I made as comfort food after a weekend of water and power issues, while having guests in our BnB I must add!

The geyser burst Thursday morning in the guest cottage, guests were expected that evening! It was a public holiday and the plumbers could not find a geyser until we said we'd pay up front and claim back from the insurance, suddenly the geyser was obtainable and the crisis was averted in time!

We have something called Loadshedding whereby power is switched off block by block for two hours at a time - we fortunately are in a block that's hardly ever affected, but this Thursday night we had the power cut as the guests arrived, fortunately still light! Loadshedding is not a nice word around here but has anyone ever heard of a company that asks it's customers to be frugal with it's product - in this instance electricity? Big corruption behind that story, some of my @teamsouthafrica members have already written about this!

Anyone ever been to the Victoria Falls and heard the thunder? A very good friend went recently, could not stop talking about it and shared her photos with me, thank you Pat!

We were awoken by the roar of water thundering right here in our house in the dead of the night - a waterpipe burst under the bath tub and the pressure from the municipal water supply caused a massive pumping action which flooded one entire wing of the house! We could almost swim to the other side of the house!

So how about some comfort food to end all this craziness!

IMG_20190323_181050.jpg

  • Spicy Hot Cross Bun

  • Chocolate Ice Cream

  • Smooth silky Swiss Chocolate filled with praline & a nut

  • Red grapes to make up for all the indulgence

How about making a sandwich with this? Can be done as I found out :)

Well you deserved this comfort food - o yes the wonderful loadshedding...This just proves again that almost anything will be better with icecream and chocolate

We've somehow been spared a lot of the loadshedding, but the geyser and waterpipe issues was really scary!
Thank you for your comments @anneke :)

For sure @anneke, we're at least not affected as badly as others, somehow we're a little 'island' that seldom has loadshedding, not sure how that happened so when we do go off, we know there's big trouble with Eskom!

Oh my word! What a weekend you have had @lizelle!!! Needless to say, a sandwich like this is the only thing to sooth the soul. Wow! Choco-licious indeed! So creative, even after all of this trauma. I can't believe your electricity is randomly shut off, I am so sorry! Really stinks and then to have the tub plumbing burst. I hope the ice cream sandwich helped a bit. Blessings my friend

It really was horrid, the pipe burst inside the house was the worst. Fortunately hubby woke up first, mom would have fallen if she got up, her bedroom was flooded badly as it's right by that bathroom. Ours was dry, the floor level being a little higher. But we laughed afterwards, told Mom she was sleeping on a cruise ship that night ;) The problem was quite an easy one to fix for the plumbers, just the vanity had to be pulled apart to gain access, all the towels for the house was soaked as the water blew into that vanity. The water supply was on again by 8am, just the mopping took hours! Our guests slept through all of that thankfully, the cottage is away from the house ;);)
Thank you my friend!

Oh my goodness! Horrible, horrible. I can't imagine the mopping, wet towels and cleaning. Now you need a vacation. I can't imagine what would happen if your mom got up in the night and slipped in the water. Bless your heart @lizelle, and with guests to take care of in the morning. How did you find time to make a sandwich ;) Amazing woman you are!

Load shedding is never fun I have lived in a few places where it was common, one place we only had electricity for like 4 hours a day for a few months if we were luckyLuckily we had a generator for when we needed it but still had to be careful with that as getting fuel was not always easy

So sorry to hear about the water pipe burst

Never tried hot cross buns with ice cream, but I am sure that must be a real nice combination

Thank you @tattoodjay, they fortunately have a schedule and stick to it so we can plan around it. There's 4 stages and we're only affected from Stage 3 & 4 which is only happening now, but luckily just two hours a day, the 18:00-20:00 is the worst time. We have not really felt the loadshedding while it was Stages 1 & 2 so have not bothered with a generator, may have to look at that as they say our power utility (Eskom) really is in a bad state, lack of maintenance, awarding contracts to buddies who are not providing coal etc etc!!!
Our pipe burst was the worst though!

Having a planned schedule makes it easier to work around I guess but still must be frustrating

Load-shedding in Johannesburg they are being hit twice a day, four and a half hours at a time, we have been fortunate at twice a day for two hour stretches sometimes a little longer Lizelle.

My sons told me that it sometimes even goes off for longer than that! We're very fortunate, somehow we're in an industrial block yet have no industries near us, two petrol stations yes, so we only go off from Stage 3 onwards and then it's once a day only, not complaining about that!

Haha, for a minute I thought it was peanut butter, chocolate and ice cream melting over a toasted hot-cross bun sounds way more like a comfort food.

Oh load shedding, water problems, pay, pay, pay, while others play! Story of our lives.

LOL Peanut butter just won't do the trick ;)
Thank you for your feedback @joanstewart:)

Congratulations! This post has been chosen as one of the daily Whistle Stops for The STEEM Engine!

You can see your post's place along the track here: The Daily Whistle Stops, Issue 438 (03/24/19)

It was a public holiday and the plumbers could not find a geyser until we said we'd pay up front and claim back from the insurance, suddenly the geyser was obtainable and the crisis was averted in time!

Like magic!!

Yep money talks not so! Everything was supposedly closed until we said we'd pay!!!

Oh shiiiiiiiit! So sry to hear about the pipe burst! Love the sandwich tho lol.

Bout time some1 made an ice cream sandwich :)

I will never forget that noise, we could not even see where the water was coming from till the plumbers came! We turned off the main supply, what a relief when that sound stopped but it still was a couple of hours of mopping! Thank you for your comments @jaybird!

Jeesus! At least the worst is over !

Howdy lizelle! I've been hearing about all the utility problems down there, the whole government needs replaced. Sorry you guys have to live with that situation.
But at least you have some great comfort food, that looks dreamy!

It's a real mess @janton, unfortunately way too many corrupt politicians! Thank you for stopping by :)

howdy lizelle! It sure is. It looks like they've taken corruption to a new level there!

Goodness food after the badness of loadshedding is great! We are in a hot spot as usual and get 3 cuts for 2 and a half hours each every day. 10am, 12noon and 6pm. I feel for the small business owners!
Blessings!

Oh no that's bad, we're very lucky then, only once a day and only from stage 3, no loadshedding this week ;)
Thank you for your lovely comments my friend:)
