Steemit Sandwich Contest Week 31 - It's a Wild Wrap
Getting My Sandwich Together
This sandwich maybe isn't too different from the last one I entered into the Steemit Sandwich challenge. But that's just because it's a great sandwich. This time, though, the theme for @jaybird's Steemit Sandwich Contest is Zero Wheat.
I don't need any bread for this sandwich. I'm using big leaves from wild field mustard to make a wrap. And I'm adding wild carrots because the season for them will be over, once the plants start growing. Their roots will become tough and woody. But right now, they are still tender if I steam them. And they are delicious.
Enjoying My Sandwich
An Unfortunate Discovery
I served it with pumpkin seed chips (no wheat) and a gluten-free beer (no wheat). I made sure to check the ingredients. But then I checked the ingredients of my tofu -- and what a big surprise! Check by the red stars in my photo -- WHEAT!! So I guess my entry is null! Aaarrggh!
But I will end on a positive note. I enjoyed my sandwich. Wild field mustard leaves make a great wrap! Fortunately, I am not sensitive to wheat. But this sandwich experience taught me a lesson about the challenges that other people face in trying to eat wheat free.
I hope you get to enjoy fresh wild greens of some sort this spring! Some of them make great sandwich wraps -- no bread, or wheat, needed! But if zero wheat is important, watch out for hidden ingredients!
I'll review this Oregon beer on #beersaturday, so watch for that! :D
What Do You Think?
- Are you ever surprised by ingredients?
- Do you like wraps for sandwiches?
- Do you eat flowers?
- Would you eat my wild mustard tofu wrap?
I eat a lot of wild plants and show you how, because I believe that we can all have lives that are richer, more secure, more grounded, and more interesting by getting to know the plants and the land around us – in our yards, our parks, and our wild places.
Thanks @jaybird for creating the Steemit Sandwich contest!
Plant List
- Wild field mustard = Brassica rapa
- Wild Carrot or Queen Anne's Lace - Daucus carota - roots
- English daisy - Bellis perennis - flowers
- Dandelion - Taraxacum officinale - flowers
- Purple deadnettle - Lamium purpureum - young leaves and flowers
Yes I would eat the sándwich!! I allways wonder, Where do you live to find all this? How big is your garden??
Great post!
Thanks, @jorgegp! I have a lot of weeds in my yard -- in the front, the side, and in the back. And in my garden, too. I have just over a 1/2 hectare in my yard. But I forage around my neighborhood, too. Or anyplace, lol. There is so much food out there, waiting for us to use it!
oh wow I am impressed with your sandwich @haphazard-hstead . How did it taste? where do you live to get all those wild ingredients? I would like to see you make more of these types of sandwiches in the future. I participate too in the steemit sandwich contest
@intrepidsurfer
Thanks, @intrepidsurfer! My wild weed wrap was really tasty. I could taste the grassiness of the purple deadnettle, and the carrot flavor of the wild carrots. The pickles are sweet and that went well with the garlic-herb tofu. Wild field mustard is not hot at all, but a simple, robust taste of greens. Like spinach. All in all, a great combination.
I live in Oregon's Willamette Valley. I have a lot of weeds in my yard. I let my grass grow longer than most people, so the weeds have a chance to grow, too, and get big enough to eat. It's pretty quick to harvest most of them -- it takes longer to dig the wild carrots, lol.
I hope you enter the Steemit Sandwich contest sometime! :D
Beautiful sandwich! In the meantime, I think it looks like sushi….
Again, I like the way you decorated your sandwich with yellow flower. You cooked them with wild ingredients…that’s great, as always! Well done! ;)
Thanks, @tangmo! I do like finding wild food. It still surprises me how much there is, all around us. Do you have dandelions around you?
You're welcome! You are good at finding wild food indeed. ;)
The flower is really beautiful, the same as your profile picture. I'm not sure whether we have this kind of flower around us or not....
Dandelions have spread across many parts of the world. European settlers planted dandelions all over the place, because they are so easy to grow and are good food. But now, people think of them as weeds. But I wonder how well they manage in tropical climates. It is interesting how some plants can handle such different climates, and others need such special conditions to do well.
I'm much surprised why people think of them as weeds. They are very beautiful indeed. And it's good that they are so easy to grow and are good food.
I also wonder how some plants can handle such different climates, and others need such special conditions to do well.... Really interesting indeed. ;)
I find it FANTASTIC using the leaves as a sandwich!! It also looks so cool and well balanced and damn delicious, to be honest. Do you do something will all your recipes? All of them are so beautiful actually, they are worth selling even.
Love it that all the ingredients are so fresh!! I didnt know dandylions were eatable also hahaahah
Thanks, @karinxxl! Garden mustard greens, or collard greens, or even large leaf lettuce would be good for wraps, too. I do eat a lot of wild plants. It's amazing to me how much free food is all around us. I would rather take a walk for my salad than go to the store, lol. I appreciate how posting on Steemit has encouraged me to write more about foraging and eating wild food. Thanks for your encouragement, too, to do something more with my posts, too. You've got me thinking! :D
Yeah serious! Especially the nature fact and finding your food is a concept that more and more people are getting interested in. Like how you find your find, how you see the difference beteeen something good and bad.
Its magazine worthy! And honestly its good to get this kind of knowledge back into the world more.
I've got a project that I will be rolling out soon, that you may like. I will be rolling it out this next week. The Steemit Foragers Club. And I will be developing and teaching a foraging course here on Steemit. :D
Great recipe and it looks yummy! 😋
Thanks, @blackberryskunk! That means a lot coming from a sandwich master like you! Your winning sandwich was so good!
I would definitely eat you wrap. It reminds me more of sushi and so I would do my best to find some wheat-free soy sauce and enjoy. Yep, soy sauce generally has wheat in it. I do eat flowers and quite enjoy them. My favourite are runner pea blossoms and nasturtium. I did not know those little daisies were edible. The geese in these parts love to eat them, so I should have guessed.
This is always available at Whole Foods
It is organic, wheat fee and non GMO. They have low salt also.
Thanks for pointing that out! It's great that there are options for folks that can't have certain kinds of plants or foods.
I use Bragg's soy seasoning and it doesn't have any wheat. And I didn't even think that tofu would have any wheat in it. I'm glad you enjoy flowers, too! Pea blossoms and nasturtiums are good ones! I eat the English Daisy flowers regularly, a few here and there. I wrote a post about them here on Steemit last year. The leaves are good, too! These wild field mustard leaves do act a lot like seaweed when they are steamed, so sushi would be a good way to use them. These here are pretty big and fat! With one or two leaves, they would be just right for sushi! Thanks for the idea! :D
Bragg is good ... I have used it before:)
Does that make us Bragg-arts? ; )
I don't know about my have been guilty. LOL. Actually I went off Bragg. I find it too sweet. I am Yamasa fan now. It has a more brewed and tangy flavor:)
I've never heard of Yamasa. I'll have to keep my eyes open for that. Thanks!
So very tasty:)
I do not like the root of parsley. It is too flavorful for me and it has a pronounced taste. But the main thing is spring. )
Fair enough, @shady! It's a good thing there are so many plants for us to choose from for eating! Spring is the main thing right now, for sure! :D
Just incredible food photos, it looks very tasty, although I'm a bit lacking meat ;)
Thanks, @yetaras! haha -- I could have put some canned sardines in there instead of the tofu. That would have been delicious, too! :D
I love sardines! :)
You have good taste! ; )

Thanks for your answers, @alandefong! That's a good point about wraps, for sure. I hope you get to enjoy some good-tasting flowers this spring! :D
It looks amazing as always!!! Totally reminded me of nori which is basically dried sheets of algae used to wrap sushi!
Thanks, @old-guy-photos! I better brush up on my sushi making. I didn't think of that while I was making my wrap, but I can totally see it now. These wild field mustard leaves really would be great for sushi rolls. Thanks!
