Steemit Sandwich Contest Week #58 | The Famous Philly Steak and Cheese!!
Good day my creative Sandwich elves!
Here we are again, whipping up amazingly creative sandwiches for @jaybird’s Steemit Sandwich Contest!
@jaybird has done an incredible job of keeping us all on task for well over a year! What a great sandwich community he has created! Thanks @jaybird for hosting this fun venue! I continue to be challenged and learn something new each week, so many new faces as well as those who have been here from the beginning!
So excited about this week’s sandwich…it too is famous…just not from any cartoon characters!
The Famous Philly Steak and Cheese!
This sandwich originated in hmmmmm.…Philidelphia! That’s right, Pat and Harry Olivieri owned a hot dog stand, got bored with serving one item, hot dogs… and decided to try something different. They chopped up a steak, added onions and threw it on the grill. Pat was eating this new creation when a local cab driver stopped by. The cab driver asked if he could have the sandwich….the rest is history! A star was born, and yes, the Olivieri’s stopped making hot dogs! They relocated their hot dog stand near an Italian market and business went crazy
I Used
Making the Italian Rolls!
- Bread Flour
- Olive Oil
- Salt
- Yeast
- Filtered Water
Phlly Steak and Cheese
- Rib eye Steak
- Salt/Pepper
- Montreal Steak Seasoning
- Olive Oil
- Provolone Cheese
- Srirachi Sauce
- Mayo
- Onions
- Mushrooms
- Roasted Red Peppers
- New Potatoes
- Seasoned Salt
- Peanut Oil
- Wickles Dirty Dill Pickles
- Sandwich Elf Spirit
I started with the bread as this was an important element when making an awesome Philly Steak and Cheese! I thought a nice Italian roll would be nice. Prep the flour, allow it to rise and divide into 8 evenly sized balls and let it rest for 15 minutes. Roll these little guys into rectangles and roll up like a jelly roll. yes a jelly roll! Taper them at the end, and lay them seam side down, slit the tops diagonally every 2” cover and let rise for 30 minutes or until double in size. Preheat your oven to 375 and bake for 20-23 minutes.
Now the steak! Originally the description for the cooked Philly Steak sandwich meat was called “frizzled meat”. I can’t imagine the visions you conjured up with that, but you must slice the steak very thin! Then when you cook it on a hot griddle or stove the edges will curl… you know frizzle!
Wash and slice the red peppers, drizzle with oil, salt and pepper. Sprinkle Minced garlic and roast them for about 25 minutes.
You have to have onions with this sandwich…lots in fact! So slice them, separate into rings along with the sliced mushrooms. Saute them and set them aside.
Don’t forget the steak! Like I said, slice this very thin. Like 1/8” thick, or you won’t achieve the frizzle! Spice it with a bit of Montreal Steak sauce, and quick fry on your favorite griddle or grill. Toss the onion/mushroom mixture in when the steak is done, cover with Provolone slices and melt a bit! Oh I forgot to tell you, originally the sandwich was made with Cheese Whiz…..couldn’t go there. It switched to provolone cheese along the way. Mushrooms, roasted peppers are popular with this famous sandwich! Of course I had to include those!
I whipped a little bit of sriracha sauce and mayo together to coat the rolls, this added such a nice smooth and spicy flavor!
Of course I had to have fries with this so I chopped up a couple of New potatoes and fried them in a bit of Peanut oil....a must you know! Sprinkle on that seasoned salt...YUM!
Into the rolls we go and ….Voila!
Quite a tasty one if I may say so!
Have a seat and….enjoy!
Thanks for stopping by, hope you’ll try this one! No wonder it is so popular! Thanks again @jaybird for another super week of Steemit Sandwich Contest!
And as always, blessings to you all!
What the heck @birdsinparadise, this looks absolutely smashing! Your own bread rolls as well! I've just woken up and now I'm hungry, very well done my fellow TSE chef :)
hehehe, glad you enjoyed it my friend! I haven't eaten one for breakfast although don't put it past me! Thank you for your sweet support and comments. Love TSE community, so many new friends!
It certainly is a lovely bunch of people :)
My God- you go whipping up your own rolls and breads willy nilly. Haha… fantastic job! I used to love philly steak Samir’s in my day but I subbed chicken and the go to sauce was always a buffalo sauce… I suppose I could make a buffalo mushroom onion bell pepper philly with a non dairy cheese 🤔 hmmmm (might be on our menu here shortly) … thanks for the inspiration @birdsinparadise :)
Glad you enjoyed it my friend....hey I posted vegan philly steak sandwich a few months ago...it was a beast of a sandwich and reallllllly good. Check it out...I think you will really like it!:) I would love to hear what you think ....Thanks for stopping by!
Oh yeah “vegan beasting” ! Of course you knocked it out of the park (see what I did there?).
Congratulations! This post has been chosen as one of the daily Whistle Stops for The STEEM Engine!
You can see your post's place along the track here: The Daily Whistle Stops, Issue 260 (9/17/18)
Thank you so much TSE! Love this community, honored to be featured :)
Fuck ya. Epic philly cheese steak!
Love the cheesy hoemade roll. You’re right very important. Interesting that u cut up the ribeye before cooking too!!
Love the extra dry pickles and of course elf spirit hahah this entry is magical ;)
What’s with the penut oil btw... that’s not a traditional philly cheese ingredient, i’m into it tho.
Lastly thanks for the kind words.
Awesome work 😎
Thank you @jaybird, glad you enjoyed it! Definitely fun to prepare! Truly appreciate what you're doing here! It's a great community :)
That really is one good looking sandwich and fries basket if I ever saw one. I hate when I look at these food posts so late in the day. Between you and @lizelle you two drive me to break my rule on eating after 6:00 PM when I see stuff like this. Thanks, thanks a lot.
Haha mr Papper, I've just woken up to this gorgeous sandwich, I really should not look at steemit first thing neither late at night! I'd even be happy just eating one of these bread rolls right now!
oops, didn't mean to break your 6 pm eating rule @sultnpapper, lol I appreciate your kind comments. And yes, @lizelle posts many enticing recipes so watch out with that late night TSE reading :)
How well I know, and you are most welcome.
I am a sucker for Philly cheese steak with onions and mushrooms.
Man, this looks great. Thanks for sharing!
I know...they're deadly aren't they? Can't have these too often :) Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for stopping in
When I first read the ingredients and saw potatoes, I was a bit puzzled but then concluded that people really do put all sorts of stuff in their sandwiches :D Then I got to the end of the post and saw that you made fries and ate them on the side, ok :D The sandwich looks yummy, even without potatoes inside :)
Sorry for the confusion @zen-art...I was tired and almost forgot to mention the wonderful fries...could have done a better job indicating that with the ingredients. You're right, some people put fries on everything...although they're so good I see why! I try to have them as a special treat...too addicting Glad you enjoyed the wich and fries :)
Love it!😻
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for stopping by @blackberryskunk!
