Hello, everyone! For this contest, I decided to use this photograph. I took it in the market of the virgin of Chiquinquirá, right next to the "Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá".
The history of this place is quite striking. It dates back to the year 1560 in which a priest from Spain arrives in Tunja and asks a painter, also Spanish, to help him equip the chapel of the place with a canvas of the Virgin of the Rosary.
In 1562 the painting was already in the chapel. The ceiling of the room was straw, and the rainwater deteriorated the image to the point of becoming blurred. It was transferred to the town of chiquinquirá and abandoned in a room that sometimes was used as an oratory.
By the year 1586, a woman decides to repair the canvas and put the place into a space of prayer. For a long time, she prayed to the Virgin of the Rosary asking her to appear. The 26 of December of 1586, her desire becomes a reality.
The painting went from being that worn old canvas to the most beautiful image of the Virgin of the Rosary that Maria had ever seen. Since then, the woman began to venerate "Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá". The humble place where the painting lay was put in charge of the Dominicans, an order of preachers who built a monastery where they put safely the painting of the virgin.
The Colombian government decreed the Virgin of Chiquinquirá as queen and patron since 1919. The basilica is a rather touristy place. Nearby is a street that functions as a kind of market in which visitors can purchase different products with the image of the virgin like bracelets, rosaries or statues. The market also sells a variety of typical Colombian food.

La historia de esta basílica se remonta al año 1560 en el que un sacerdote proveniente de España llega a Tunja y le pide a un pintor, también español, que le ayude a dotar la capilla del lugar con un lienzo de la Virgen del Rosario.
En 1562 ya estaba la pintura en la capilla. El techo del recinto era de paja y el agua de la lluvia deterioró la imagen, al punto de ponerse borrosa. Fue trasladada a la población de Chiquinquirá y abandonada en una habitación que a veces era usada como oratorio.
Para el año 1586, una mujer llamada María, decide reparar el lienzo y acondicionar el lugar para convertirlo en un espacio de oración. Durante mucho tiempo rezó a la Virgen del Rosario pidiendole que apareciera. El 26 de diciembre de 1586, su deseo se hace realidad de una forma muy particular.
La pintura pasó de ser aquel lienzo viejo y desgastado a la más hermosa imagen de la Virgen del Rosario que alguna vez María había visto. Desde entonces, la mujer empezó a venerar a “Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Chiquinquirá”. El humilde lugar donde yacía la pintura fue puesto a cargo de los Dominicos, orden de predicadores que construyeron un monasterio donde pusieron a salvo el cuadro de la virgen.
El gobierno colombiano decretó a la virgen de chiquinquirá como reina y patrona desde el año 1919. La básilica es un lugar bastante turístico. A sus alrededores está una calle que funciona como una especie de mercado en el que los visitantes pueden adquirir distintos productos con la imagen de la virgen como pulseras, rosarios o estatuas. También venden variedad de comida típica colombiana.
