Archeological Dig 🌀 Steemit Photo Challenge 43 (Entry 1)

in #steemitphotochallenge7 years ago (edited)

Although there is evidence of the grinding of grain or olives dating back to 4500 BCE at this site, it is also referred to in both the Jewish scriptures and the New Testament. This is the location of the City of King David, just outside Jerusalem's Old City walls, which are just to my left from this vantage.

The ancient city extends further than what you can see, but it's so built up around it that the dig could only start here. (It was a parking lot and office not long ago.)

At this dig are found some homes of the wealthy, and what because of associated archeological finds, such as inscriptions and seals, are believed to be various administrative constructions. There is also a defensive water supply, that functions perfectly even today, as well as the famed Pool of Siloam, and Gihon Spring. Further up the hill, it is thought that part of the actual palace of King David has also been found.

Here is an approximate rendering of the city in the time of King Herod.
