This is true, although ever since I moved to Switzerland I've been purchasing much more locally produced food and a few weeks ago I even went to pluck my own beans. The farmer let the locals on it as the crops were destroyed by hail and he couldn't harvest it by machine, so he'd have to spend money to get it harvested manually, which would cost more than it would bring him.
