HAPPY TRICK OR CANNING!!! (AKA -- how to participate in Halloween, even when you and your kids are too old for it AND make a difference)

How many times have we or our kids said, "I am starving"????

Too Many

There is a real difference between being hungry and truly lacking food. I am sure at some point we have all skipped a meal or two, but the odds are high that we had a snack or a sugary drink to keep us going.

However, you ever had to go several days without food? Or just one egg or one pancake because the household had to make the food last until next paycheck?

How Can You Make A Difference?

There are many ways to make the world a better place. Collecting non-perishable food for your local food pantry is one such way.

Trick or Canning

This is a neat spin on the traditional door-to-door for candy. Instead, you coordinate with your local food pantry by letting them know your Trick or Canning plans for going door-to-door to collect non-perishable food stuffs.

The things you want to know are:

  1. Do they have a need for food stuffs? And if not, what do they need (personal items or diapers)?
  2. Can you list their contact information on the flyer that you going to design? Including drop-off times, if folks want to bring additional donations?
  3. When can you drop off the food stuffs that you and your child(ren) have collected?

Once you have this information, you can design your flyer.

Why A Flyer?

About five to seven days before the Big Trick or Canning Event, you will want to distribute flyers to the homes you will be visiting. Not only does this keep the neighborhood from being "surprised" by this weird new event, but some amazing folks will round up a whole bag or more of non-perishable food stuffs.

Make sure the flyer has the who, what, when, why, where, and how. Most folks love this Trick or Canning idea, and if given the right information will be big supporters.

Logistics

If you are working with a food pantry and have distributed flyers, be prepared for a grand response. You will want to have boxes or bags in the vehicle that is trailing the Trick or Canning Party.

And be prepared to return home to empty a small vehicle. It CAN happen. But look at all the good fun to be had!

During this Spooky Season, why not go Trick or Canning with your older kids???

Not only do they still get to dress up for Halloween, but it teaches them civic duty and compassion for others.

And remind the older ones that if they have a great attitude about it, some folks will give them candy. Doing good deeds does not have to be boring! But it is our job as parents to teach them how to make it fun.
