Garena was established in Singapore in 2009.
In 2012, it dispatched its first item, Garena+, a web based game and social stage for individuals to find, download and play internet games.
In November 2011, Garena reported its distributing rights for the group based shooter game, Firefall, in Southeast Asia and Taiwan.[4]
In December 2011, Garena reported their collaboration[5] with internet games designer, Changyou, to distribute and work the famous 3D combative techniques game, Duke of Mount Deer, in Taiwan. In May 2017, Garena was renamed to Sea Limited.[11][12] However, Garena was held as a brand name of Sea Limited (also known as Sea Group).[13]
In October 2017, Sea Limited petitioned for a first sale of stock on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and meant to raise US$1 billion. Prior to the IPO, Tencent was the significant investor of Sea Limited, for 39.7% offers. It was trailed by Blue Dolphins Venture, set up by Garena's originator Forrest Li, for 15%. Li actually claimed 20% offers, and Chief Technology Officer, Gang Ye, 10%.[14]
In January 2020, Garena procured Vancouver-based Phoenix Labs, the engineers of Dauntless.[15] The securing didn't influence the activities of Phoenix Labs or Dauntless yet assisted Garena with growing its worldwide presence.[16]
