How Im Winning the Friday Night Pizza Battle

Full disclosure, we had (homemade) pizza for lunch

There is something about Friday's that makes them perfect for take out.

The weekend is here, and its so much easier to have something delivered to you, then to spend the evening cooking, and the cleaning up after your cooking.

At our household, Pizza was becoming a Friday Night Staple.

I didn't like that.

Its expensive. Its unhealthy. I felt I could do better.

So I did

I replaced my pizza box for a veggie box.

Now every Friday morning, for less than what I was paying for pizza, a box of local, organic, farm fresh produce gets delivered to my door. The box comes with greens, and lettuce, avocados, potatoes, the best apples ever, oranges, beets, cauliflower, broccoli. Etc etc. Its a customizable box, so I try to remember to get on there and make sure that they aren't delivering any fennel or carrots to us. (Who needs so many carrots?)

It makes it difficult for me to happily go out to eat all weekend. How can I let all of that delicious produce go bad? So now, instead of getting some pizzas, or some burgers, or pho, or something else, that drains my bank account, swells my ankles, and makes my kids moody. I cook farm fresh veggie meals.

Today we had green beans with tomatoes and onions, roasted potatoes, and roasted broccoli with a little bit of parmesan cheese. I heated up some spaghetti sauce and pretended we didn't have ketchup.

And I still have lots of delicious veggies in the fridge. Mmmmmm.

My husband asked me if we were getting a "good deal" today. If I would "just" go to the grocery store, would it be cheaper?

Honestly, its probably a wash, their avocados are priced too high, their greens are given at a discount. One thing I do know. Its cheaper than pizza.

What about you? Do you eat out or in on Fridays?

Sort:

Unfortunately when we decided to clean up our diet we stopped going out. There are no organic food chain around here or an organic restaurant. So we always eat in.

But we do have Friday pizzas. To change things up we have veggie pizza and it's yummy even without any meat.

Mmmm roasted potatoes and broccoli are yummy.

Thanks for stopping by!

We are lucky and have restaurants that serve organic, farm-fresh, even vegan type foods. But it’s so difficult to justify the cost.

Even then, the pizza restaurant that does “organic” around here would have to sell us about 4 pizzas to feed our family of 5 - they’re that small.

We still sometimes eat pizza in Friday’s, but it’s home-made and not delivered.

Oh I bet they're costly. It's crazy why organic is so expensive. We're hoping the increased support for organic will make it the norm and drive the prices down.

Homemade pizza is great since you can't get it the way you really want it outside. Funny thing, we had taco/veggie pizza for Monday dinner. Didn't wait Friday :)

You've know the best way to make money, not even only save money but still healthier than pizza 🍕

I'm a bachelor so I eat outside always

Maybe it’s different near your home. But here, if you eat out every day, you are either spending lots of extra money - or filling your body with unhealthy foods.

I bet you enjoy your visits home 🏡. Thanks for stopping by, I enjoy your perspective.

Mmmmmmmm @metzli let me call you mama cooker haha.... Lol.
good to have nice time with family out there. But I prefer having fun Sunday than Friday...... But @metzli to say the fact your delicious food is Hummmm...... That's why you are looking beautiful as I can see in your profile picture

Ah, Sunday’s ❤️ I love those too.

Correct 👏👏👏stay blessed @metzli

Haha Mrs @metzli alias (mama cook) lol. I can see that your food is looking so delicious and I know your your family would love. Well, I am a bachelor so I do eat outside. But when I have my own family I will stop eating outside. Thanks for sharing your Friday tips. How are you doing today? My regards to your family

We are Asians! We eat out everyday! But I do want to change that soon hopefully. It is tough working full time with young children. Honestly cooking is the last thing on my mind. Having said that, I love having a wholesome nutritious home cooked meal all done by my Mum or Mum in law! 😆 I agree with you, definitely cheaper than pizza!

Cooking can be a full time job. I don’t know how I’d manage all the sourcing, maintaining and preparing of the meals if I worked full time. We’d eat out too!

You do lots of awesome stuff for your family.

Yum! Sounds delish!
I sure do miss the occassional pizza! But we are definitely surving without!

Pizza is expensive, we only have it once in a blue moon. I would sometimes reason to myself that it's made of a large piece of dough with a thin topping, that reason is enough to put me off, hah! We eat on Fridays, during work days I'd mostly go a all-in-a-pot meal with my rice cooker, just dump everything in and cook them with rice. Easy, nice, cheap, makes everybody happy.

Do you use a crock pot? You can really put together some delicious meals in those.

I use my crock pot to make beans, year round, but in the summer, I use it lots as I like to keep the oven off.

Unfortunately I don't have one, so other than the oven the rice cooker is my best friend 😂 it's amazing how many functions are added into the rice cooker these days, even baking a cake is a breeze! Still, I'd love to own a crock pot one day. Need to save some money for that.

Please make a cake in your rice cooker and blog about it. Please! I’m so intrigued.

Haha alright, will make one once I get the time. I tried it once and loved it, best part is I don't need to constantly check whether it's done, or if it'll get burnt! Great for baking noobs like me 😂

Haha! I love it! I pretend to be out of ketchup too! Lol! Even with organic, there is a ton of sugar there! What I do to try to make it a tad healthier is add in turmeric (natural anti-inflammatory and adds a nice tang) and then either pureed sweet potato or butternut squash. It's hardly noticeable, still super tasty and you just got a bonus veggie in the mix, cutting down the sugar intake. Woot! Woot!

Turmeric huh? I might just try that...

Do you make your own ketchup? Or do you “just” sweet-potato-it and then put it back in the bottle?

In Germany, unfortunately, pizza is much less expensive than that amount of really fresh fruits and vegetables :(
That said, I don't know how many people are in your household, maybe it evens out if you have to make a couple of pizzas and not only the two me and my boyfriend make sometimes.

Looks really delicious by the way :)

There are 5 of us in my family and we live in the Bay Area between Oakland and San Francisco. Ordering pizza for dinner runs us between 30-50 USD depending on where we buy it, what toppings we get, and wether we pick it up ourselves or get it delivered.

There are cheaper places, but we don’t like them.

The organic produce box costs $33, including delivery, and lasts all weekend. I hear how hard it is to get fresh veggies elsewhere and think it’s a shame.

In fact, I think it’s a shame to pay for fresh produce, we should have it growing abundantly in our gardens...

Thanks for stopping by.

I envy you @metzli. I wish I can cook like you. However, like @khimgoh said, Asian mostly eats outside. Simply because I'm too lazy. Haha, okay that's sound so wrong. I do cook for my LO but for me and hubby we normally just tapao from outside.

Cooking is something I do when I try to test my cooking skills. Hihi.

Mmmmmmmm @metzli let me call you mama cooker haha.... Lol.
