Symbolic play and its importance in children's development.

What is the symbolic game?

source

This game allows children to imitate and represent in a symbolic way the different roles that exist within society: the hairdresser, the doctor, the baker, the mother and father, etc. In short, children play at being what they want to be, some children play by imitating their parents' work.

Through the natural practice of this game children can express their emotions and feelings. Children everywhere play spontaneously, and in most cases, they imitate their daily lives. It is called "SYMBOLIC GAME", because they use whatever objects they have in their hands to turn them into real objects in their imagination. For example: a combing brush turns it into a microphone.

Keys to motivate children to create symbolic games.

Parents and teachers have the responsibility to motivate the child to use their imagination, this type of play is given in a simple and natural way in the infantile stage, specifically from the age of 2, where the infant has the capacity, but is never too much to help or stimulate them.

  • Take some time and participate with the children in the symbolic games, but let them lead the game.

  • Provide toys that lead them to use their imaginations to imitate real-life roles. Examples of such toys: tea sets, telephones, kitchen kits, doctor's instrument kits, etc.

  • Teach them by example, the adult can also play at being an imaginary character.

It is essential that adults encourage symbolical play in children, since it greatly favors the evolutionary formation of the infant.

The philosopher and poet Schiller, opined that children who do not play, will be adults who do not think, hence the importance of play in the formation and development of children.
