Encourage Toddlers To Learn Colours

From the ages 2-3 is when toddlers start to learn colours. At this point he or she might only to be able to name the colours and not yet associate or match them with others. So, when asked the colour of an object, he or she might only recognize it by name. This is because at this age, children rely on root memory (basic memory) and have memorized the colours only. As parents and teachers, we can help children to learn colours by association.

There are several things you can do to introduce the concept of colour to your child:

Point to an object and name the object and the colour. For example, say "The sky is blue," while pointing towards a blue sky. If this association is done often, a child will soon become familiar with it.
Frequently insert the colour description of objects into daily conversations. For example, "Peter, please get my mom’s white skirt that is on the bed."
Teach colours while playing. Never force children of this age to learn, you won’t be successful. Children of this age need to learn through play, and that’s how they learn best! Think up creative games that include colours.
Avoid questions like, "Come on, what's this colour?" Children will possibly shy away from this demand. Instead say things like, "Let's take a red ball." And then later on you can ask your child to get or find that same red ball.
In everything you do try to squeeze colours into the conversation. For example, “are you enjoying your orange juice?” or “which colour ice cream do you like best”?

Make learning fun for toddlers before they head off to more formal schooling careers. Sing songs with them about colours, paint with them and read books about rainbows. The ideas are endless! I hope you found this post interesting and informative.
