CHEWING STICKS

images (1).jpeg
Chewing sticks are some selected species of sticks used in cleaning the teeth just as tooth brush and paste.
When I was a kid, I thought it was a natural thing that my mum (of blessed memory) must wake up with a stick in her mouth because earlier before I woke up, my mum would have started chewing her stick. I was confused, but later knew that she uses it for mouth wash and that she was the one putting it in her mouth and not a miraculous thing. Lol..

The Origin of the Chewing Stick:
Chewing sticks called "pako" by the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria (my tribe) was first used by the Babylonians (3500 B.C.), Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, chewing stick of the ancient was just a small wood "toothbrush" used by our forefather's' daily oral hygiene. Although Europeans also once took advantage of this simple method, the chewing stick fell out of favor with them over three hundred years ago. The most common source of the chewing stick is the saltbush (also known as toothbrush tree) in the Middle East, in West Africa, orange and lime trees are used, while the neem tree (neems) is the main source for chewing sticks in the Indian environment. Surprisingly, close to three hundred different species of trees and shrubs in East Africa are used in making chewing sticks! Chew sticks are usually nothing fancy, they are simply made out of frayed twigs.
However, it depends on what kinds of twigs the chew sticks are made of. According to some other experts, twigs from the Salvadore Persica tree known as Miswak (also called siwak or miswaak) makes some kind of great chew sticks. Twigs that come from the licorice bush can also serve as the basis for making chewing sticks.
