Learning with Memory Techniques: The Periodic Table of Elements (86-90)
This is an easy way to learn Radon, Francium, Radium, Actinium and Thorium. Learning with memory techniques is much easier than rote repetition. Especially when the images are already layed out to you in a clear and intuitive way. We will cover five elements per post with special training images for all elements and numbers. Please check out our other episodes for more elements.
Each element comes with a special training image. These contain the element number, a common application, a phonetically similar image for the name and the element symbol. The color of each training image indicates the element category.
To memorize all elements by number we will use the Visual Major System to encode numbers into images. Please make sure you understand its principles. Here is a quick reminder how this system works:
In the Visual Major System 8 = B or P and 6 = G or K. With that we can create the word BUG. The eightysixth element Radon sounds a bit like rat. This element is radioactive.
In the Visual Major System 8 = B or P and 7 = L. With that we can create the word BALL. The eightyseventh element Francium sounds like France which can be imagined as a crêpe. The element is radioactive.
In the Visual Major System 8 = B or P. With that we can create the word BOB. The eightyeighth element Radium sounds like radar. The radioactive element was used to make glowing wrist bands. Which is a really stupid idea!
Come up with your own story or ask your students to that.
In the Visual Major System 8 = B or P and 9 = J or SH or CH. With that we can create the word BUSH. The eightyninth element Actinium sounds like actor. The element is radioactive.
In the Visual Major System 9 = J or SH or CH and 5 = S or Z. With that we can create the word CHERRY. The nintieth element Thorium sounds like Thor and we can imagine Thor's hammer. The element is radioactive.
All training images are property of Thinkkniht UG. They can be used for educational purposes in Schools and Universities. You can get the set with 50 different Visual Major System images from 0-9 for free in English and German.

The Major System for Numbers
To memorize all elements by number we will use the Visual Major System to encode numbers into images. Please make sure you understand its principles. Here is a quick reminder how this system works:
- We encode digits into consonants
- We pair the letters with phonetically similar consonants
- Vowels are free to create words
- Below on the graphic are the ten main letters
86. Radon
In the Visual Major System 8 = B or P and 6 = G or K. With that we can create the word BUG. The eightysixth element Radon sounds a bit like rat. This element is radioactive.
A huge radioactive bug is attacking a rat with its mandibles.
87. Francium
In the Visual Major System 8 = B or P and 7 = L. With that we can create the word BALL. The eightyseventh element Francium sounds like France which can be imagined as a crêpe. The element is radioactive.
A radioactive ball is wrapped in a French crêpe which makes it grow into an abomination.
88. Radium
In the Visual Major System 8 = B or P. With that we can create the word BOB. The eightyeighth element Radium sounds like radar. The radioactive element was used to make glowing wrist bands. Which is a really stupid idea!
A bob is bursting out of a radar station and all four bob drivers are wearing glowing wrist bands.
89. Actinium
In the Visual Major System 8 = B or P and 9 = J or SH or CH. With that we can create the word BUSH. The eightyninth element Actinium sounds like actor. The element is radioactive.
90. Thorium
In the Visual Major System 9 = J or SH or CH and 5 = S or Z. With that we can create the word CHERRY. The nintieth element Thorium sounds like Thor and we can imagine Thor's hammer. The element is radioactive.
