Learning with Memory Techniques: The Periodic Table of Elements (1-5)

in #steemiteducation8 years ago (edited)
This is an easy way to learn Hydrogen, Helium, Lithium, Beryllium and Boron. Learning with memory techniques is much easier than rote repetition. Especially when the images are already layed out to you in a clear and intuitive way. In this series we will memorize the Periodic Table of Elements by connecting it with the Visual Major System for numbers. We will cover five elements per post with special training images for all elements and numbers.

Elements Legend

Each element comes with a special training image. These contain the element number, a common application, a phonetically similar image for the name and the element symbol. The color of each training image indicates the element category.

1. Hydrogen

In the Visual Major System 1 = T and D. With that we can create the word TEA. The first element Hydrogen sounds like dragon or even better hi dragon. So we imagine a waving dragon. This element is used for rocket fuel for example. So imagine a rocket.

In our tea cup sleeps a tiny dragon on a tiny rocket. He sneezes fire and ignites the rocket fuel. The rocket lifts off and takes the dragon with it. He wakes up and waves us a Hi when he flies by our face.

2. Helium

In the Visual Major System 2 = N. With that we can create the word NEW. That is very abstract so we imagine New Years Firework. The second element Hydrogen sounds like hell. So we imagine hellish flames underground. This element is used for zeppelins because of its wearing properties. So imagine a flying zepelin like the Hindenburg (How to remember the day of the Hindenburg disaster).

We are starting our New Years firework battery with hundreds of them. A lonely zepelin is flying by and passes right through our exploding firework. It catches fire and creates a hellish situation for the poor passengers. They jump down and slip right through the cracks in the ground into hell.
I used the word hell twice to emphesize it a bit because often my students forget it when I just say hell on board.

3. Lithium

In the Visual Major System 3 = M. With that we can create the word MA. We can imagine our own mother or just a random pregnant woman. I prefer not to make stories with my closest relatives or friends because with memory techniques that can quickly become weird. The thrid element Lithium is a tricky one. It doesn't immediately remind me of anything. But when we break the word apart and just use the first letters we get lit which could be literature (or a lid). The element is being used to create lithium batteries. We can better imagine them as a mobile phone for example (or a Tesla car if you like).

A pregnant Ma walks belly-free over the street. She holds a mobile phone to her belly that reads classic literature over the speakers to the unborn baby.
Come up with your own story or ask your students to that.

5. Boron

Hello friend @thinkkniht congratulations for your post, thanks for sharing, keep it up

I hope you enjoyed the article. There are more to come during the next days.

Great ideas, thanks for this ! It is interesting how sometimes we remember long stories better than just short series of numbers or letters. Have a great day!!!

Actually, these "long" stories are just one image that you can visualize within a second with a little bit of training. This is how memory athletes are able to memorize 80 digits in 20 seconds and less. They just let these stories flash up in their imagination and proceed. To our brain this is just one image of a scene and not a ton of words explaining this scene to another person as we do in these kind of articles.

OK, interesting. I didn't know you get something like memory athletes. I just remember I did this course once where you had to imagine a snake climbing onto a ladder or holding a piece of dynamite in his mouth and stuff like that.

Yeah amazing how the brain can do things that are just totally incredible. Thanks so much for commenting and have a great day! Following you.

Memory Sports will emerge as one of the most influential sports of 21st century. In China it is already obligatory on some universities to have a grandmaster of memory title.

Check out this guy from Mongolia breaking the N´Junior world record at the US Open in 2016:

I've never seen anything like this. I am really curious what music he was listening to. Thanks for this and have a great day!!

He wasn't listening to any music. That would be very distractive. He used earmuffs to cancel out surrounding sounds. I guess you could say he listened to "The Sound of Silence". ;)

By the way: Many of my US collegues participate in the wekly Superhuman show on Fox. They show off their memory skills there. Check it out.

OK interesting. I see. Thanks for this. Are you also involved in this sport?

I competed at 15 championships myself and I organize the US Open and Memo Games. I am also an international arbiter and founder of memory-sports.com the first website enitirely decdicated to the sport. And in my company I work with Johannes Mallow, world memory champion from 2012.
