Timelapse and Hyperlapse- what's the difference?

Well they both speed up time creating a smooth fast forward effect, but a timelapse video usually sees the camera remain fixed in its place. Slight movement along sliders or rails are still considered a 'timelapse' where as a hyperlapse video will see the camera cover much larger distances and allow the viewer to feel as if they are zooming along too.

There are several ways to create a hyperlapse with a drone.

  1. Manually fly the drone from point A to point B and speed up the footage with the correct software.
The problem with this is, flying manually will not be consistent and slight variations in speed or direction will be exaggerated once sped up.

  2. Flying manually in 'Tripod Mode'. Controls and response times will be minimized and allow for a steadier flight path. Once sped up, these may not be as smooth as expected due to manual flight.

  3. Creating 'Waypoints' and an automatic flight path. Once the waypoints have been set - A to B and so on and so on! select a slow speed of about 2mph. The drone will fly itself around the course laid out and automatically adjust controls to be as smooth as possible. This can be sped up in post editing with more successful results.

Flying higher and further away from the subject or environment will help in masking any subtle movements from wind- the closer you are the more obvious is it.
