Never Judge a Learner by a Single Type of Intelligence! (The 9 Types of Intelligence: Also Apply to Various Steemians)

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

Yesterday, I was watching a Chinese Drama entitled, "A Love So Beautiful". I am yet to finish this series but one episode really struck me not just a mere viewer, but as a teacher. The main character isn't really the smarty type of person. She's often late, she's not good at English and Mathematics, she appears bored and sleepy in class but she's a very talented artist.

There came a time when her parents decided to let her transfer schools because they thought their daughter isn't improving at all. Instead, her grades are getting worse as time passed by. They both visited her school to talk with the teachers regarding the plan to transfer her. One teacher said, "She might be a late-bloomer. There are cases when a student starts late to do good in class." Yes, this might be true. Every learner has his or her own pace. However, what made me teary-eyed was what the other teacher said.

"She might not excel well in her studies, but she has something special. She has a really vivid and interesting imagination. She can draw very well and is very artistic. One can't say that you can only be smart if you're good at studying." That teacher paused, looked at the teary-eyed student, smiled and asked, "What do you want to do?" And then the student answered, "I don't want to transfer. If I rank 15th in our class, please allow me to stay."

People around her thought that it was impossible, but the student believed in herself. Her teachers and friends helped her and in the end, she ended as the top 13 in her class!

This episode reminded me of a movie called "Every Child is Special". I recommend this movie to everyone especially to students and fellow teachers. And because of this, I want to share to you the 9 types of Intelligence.

The 9 Types of Intelligence

1. Verbal/Linguistic

  • This is also known as "Word Smart". This type of intelligence is evident in people who are good at using words. Learners who loves writing, reading, telling stories or anything that has to do with words or language excels in this type of intelligence.

For Steemit bloggers like us, we can be considered "word smart", too. We tend to write a lot of various stuff every day. I believe there are a lot of talented poets and storytellers here, too.

2. Logical/Mathematical

  • "Number or Reasoning Smart". They are learners who are good at calculating and carrying out mathematical equations. They are also good at logical thinking that they can determine various relationships and patterns. They are our future mathematicians and scientists.

There are a lot of Steemians who are "Number or Reasoning Smart". They are usually traders who try to predict the flow of various cryptocurrencies. They can predict the patterns of the rise and dip of Steem, SBD and the like.

3. Naturalist

  • "Nature Smart". Being able to survive in the wild? This type of intelligence allow learners to distinguish animals from plants as well as to understand the complexity of nature. Young learners who are naturalists enjoy going camping and doing various outdoor activities in nature.

Travel bloggers especially those who like going on an adventure in nature are considered "Nature Smart".

4. Bodily/Kinesthetic

  • "Body Smart". A learner with a great mind and body coordination can be considered "body smart". They can make good use of their physical skills and are also able to manipulate the objects around them. They can be great athletes, dancers, etc.

I believe there are Steemian dancers and athletes here as well. Oh, surgeons are also considered body smart because they can manipulate the surgical instruments and have to coordinate their mind and body when performing a surgery.

5. Musical/Rhythmic

  • "Sound or Music Smart". A learner or a person who can recognize pitch, tone, rhythm, etc. are considered "Sound Smart". They are those people who can create and appreciate music. They can be future musicians, be it the vocalist, drummer, guitarist, conductor, etc.

I believe there are a lot of "Music Smart" here on Steemit. I have listened to some recordings and watched some videos of awesome "Music Smart" steemians.

6. Interpersonal/Social

  • "People Smart". A person who can establish a great verbal and even non-verbal communication with others are considered "people smart". This learner has the ability to interact and understand other people effectively. They are good at adapting to the different mood or emotion the person/people they're interacting to have. I believe teachers should have this type of intelligence.

Having said that, there are a lot of teachers here on Steemit and I'm glad to be one of them. Let's all unite under @steemiteducation.

7. Intrapersonal

  • "Self Smart". Not only "being able to deal well with others" is considered an intelligence, but also "dealing with oneself". If you understand yourself, your thoughts and emotions pretty well, you can be considered "Self Smart". This kind of intelligence is very common among Psychologists, philosophers, etc because not only do they understand themselves well, but they also understand human condition.

There are people like this on Steemit, too. They are usually those who are very self-motivated and those who are very much aware of who they are.

8. Visual/Spatial

  • "Picture Smart". They are those very imaginative people. They are often gifted with graphic and artistic skills. Aside from that, they are also good at spatial reasoning, meaning they good look at or imagine something in 3D. Artists, architects, pilots, sailors, etc possess this type of intelligence.

Steemit is blessed with a lot of Steemians possessing this type of intelligence. Artists and designers are everywhere in the platform!

9. Existential

  • "Life Smart." A person with existential intelligence usually deeply questions about life. "What is the essence of our existence?", "Why do die?", "How did our life end up like this?"

I personally know someone here on Steemit who I often talk about life and human existence. I bet a lot of Steemians also thought of these things deeply making them exhibit their existential intelligence.

As educators, we shouldn't judge a learner solely on their academics. Every learner is special. Each of them is gifted with a certain intelligence in which they excel more than the others. Let's guide and nurture them. Let's lead them to become the flower that they want to be... and that flower would add up a unique beauty to this beautiful world.

Yeah, Professor Howard Gardner has introduced the Theory of Multiple intelligence. According to his theory, different people have different skills in which they are good at. Everyone is unique and no one can be just like another one. So we all should be able to identify our skills and to improve what we already have and to practice what we don't.

This is great content especially for the students cuz many students are worried thinking that they can't study and learn and do this and that. But we all should know that we have unique skills which we are good at. Thanks a lot for sharing this with us.

Thanks a lot, imouto-chan! ^^ We are all unique, indeed!
